Pam B
Let me explain- I know how to USE it- but I am curious as to how you have your kids use it. (That doesn't help, does it?!) Okay, I'm trying to find out what you require them to watch and in what order- I guess. We have been having *SO* much trouble this year with math :banghead: We all are just sick of the whole mess! Mean while- dh is wondreing if I'm capable.. or at least that's my impression! Currently- this is what I have strated to make them do: Drill Listen/Watch the lesson. Do lesson practice A. Watch the solution for A. >If it's wrong, write it in pen correctly! Move on to the next problem...... Then I will check it and go over anything they do not understand. That is how they do the whole thing. Mind you- yes, it DOES take a long time, but my thoughts were that I wanted them to SEE and HEAR the problems being worked out. Plus- immediate the feedbackcorrection to what they did wrong (or right) is great! Problem: Takes too long & they are bored. Solutions??? Anyone??? momee
What are they bored with? Are they learning and just not liking it? I probably should ask what level also. My dd is at Saxon 7/6. Math is not her favorite but she does it without complaints. DS when he did Saxon got seriously stuck around 8/7 and started to have major problems. We weren't using a dvd program and ended up switching which I wish we wouldn't have done but that was years ago. I'm going to be doing the same thing as you've posted above. I have been doing the same thing only I've been the Saxon teacher, lol this past year. This year I'm considering ordering the DVD or Cd's, whatever they are. lynds2
I have dd watch it after we talk about the lesson. She hates the video, thinks I do a better job. But, I think it is important to have both perspectives. Lyndsey

We are also using 7/6 - well, my boys are, my daughter is using 8/7. They all say it is boring. DD just does it to get it over with. Boys complain until I'm about to explode. Eldest DS-12- is stuck in a major way. I've been reading other posts on here and am wondering if he is getting low ggrades due to his stage. But, also- I just can't seem to get the math through to him. Right now we are using the Saxon Teacher. Are you thinking of going to the DIVE, or is there something else? We actually switched from using the DIVE as there were so many mistakes. It drove them crazy. I also thought it was sloppy writing all over the board... :tongue_smilie: So- switched to the teacher cd as it went over the ENTIRE lesson- every problem (well, not the metal or prob solving) but everything else. She works them out and I liked the idea of them watching them be worked out correctly. A couple months ago, DD and EDS's grades were getting worse. Before they were watching the lesson presentation, then we would tak about it and I would make sure they understood. They would do their work, then we'd correct. (sigh) Maybe it's me and I should be the one to do the lesson with all of them. I just don't see how in the world I'm ever going to get done when there are other subjects I have to teach as well. Plus, I thought this would promote independant learning. *I guess I should also add I have them look up the reference lessons as well. momee
Bummer. I'm sure you are frustrated by all that. We are going with the Saxon Teacher though I'm not sure she really needs it. More like she wants something visual like her older brother has. Thanks for the Saxon Dive comment, I'll be crossing that OFF my list :) I wonder, just in case this might help with your one who's having trouble, how they would do if you went backwards giving him previous tests to ensure his comprehension of past material. Call it slack day and just do some problems from the test? I know this would be like a kick in the teeth to have to go back but if they missed some key aspects and you found that issue/those issues, then you could just work on those issues and maybe after that the current work wouldn't be so difficult. I will say finding the problem if a child has missed something in a program like Saxon is a bear! It's not like you know they had trouble with chapter 10 or something. Another idea? Which problems is he missing in his lessons - go back to where that was introduced and be sure he can do the practice exercises for that topic. Just a suggestion. Also, Jann in Tx helped us tremendously to figure out some holes in my son's math reasoning at this stage. With her very reasonable fee, it was something like a $20 check I sent her or somewhere near that. Maybe you could try her if the other two suggestions don't help? Hoping you get it all straight...what a trying time. Also, don't discount those hormones. They are real and they are a big issue for some kids~ Edited August 7, 2010 by momee
pooh bear
I know this won't help for right now, but Art Reed is making videos for 76 and 87. The DVD math tutorial series for Math 76, 3rd or 4th Ed will be completed by January or February of next year and the DVD math tutorial series for Math 87, 2nd or 3rd Ed will be completed the following October. ilovemy4kids
Here's what we are doing with Saxon 8/7..... We do the drill and the mental math first together. She watches the Lesson on the Saxon Teacher. If she is confused, she does the practice problems, if she "thinks" she has it, she just skips the practice problems and does the lesson. So far, so good, but we are only on lesson 10! On 2 of the lessons, she missed a few problems related to the day's teaching so I had her go back and watch it again.
