Oak Knoll Mom
My 10 year old son picked up the book Vampirates at the library this week. Anyone know anything about them? I don't really have the desire to preread. :D I'm not worried about difficulty (he reads well), but I am concerned about content. I'm not interested in letting him read something that's super scary or where the kids have rotten attitudes. Anyone? :D Please save me from reading it! tangomoon
I haven't read this one myself, but here's an overview aimed at parents from Common Sense Media: http://www.commonsensemedia.org/book-reviews/Demons-Ocean-Vampirates-Bk.html
6packofun
My 16yo read the first 3, I think, when he was 13-14 or so, and he doesn't remember any cursing and the violence is mainly after the fact, not describing the actual event. SO, I still think this one just because of subject matter should maybe be previewed a bit, but if you're OK with vampires in general, it shouldn't be too bad and ds liked the adventure. Desert Rat
I've read them all. They aren't super scary (I'm thinking like Stephen King). The kids don't have bad attitudes. They are strong characters who try their hardest to do what's right even when that is ambiguous. The books do contain quite a bit of vampiric details. For instance, on the boat they have "feeders" who are there to take care of the vampires. In return they don't age. It's a symbiotic, consenting relationship. But it may be hard for a 10 yo to grasp. These books are kept in the young adult section in our library, if that gives you a guideline. My 10 yo hasn't read them but I would be okay with it if he wants to. He's reading Artemis Fowl right now. HTH
