Aoife
Ok so I am on the edge of jumping on the bandwagon  I would like to use this with my 3rd and 7th graders. The 7th grader is really far behind language arts wise and has no exposure to poetry at all really past what I've been giving them to read. So questions then. I am using writeshop primary with the 3rd grader (level A) and writeshop with the 7th grader. Would it be too much writing to use sentence island alongside? I have seen several reviews that actually suggest supplementing the writing since it doesn't really lend itself to character development or creative writing. Would be ok to use the island level with a 7th grader even though she needs a lot of remediation? The 3rd grader would be mostly listening in since she also is needing a lot of remediation in LA too. ( we are going through phonics with her right now) We were using GWG with them both but it isn't really sinking in and I love the style of grammar from MCT and am really hoping that it appeals more to them then GWG and FLL has. Lastly I see on the site that they really recommend getting both the teacher's guide and the student book. Are there any parts of the island level where one could scrimp and not the the teacher's book or are there any parts where you find the teacher's book more valuable to have? I was watching the thread on youngest used MCT with and I think I am going to plan on using it with my now pre-k kiddo once he hits 1st grade level because I am really liking it way more the most other LA I am seeing out there. :) thanks in advance! ( we are going through phonics with her right now) You certainly could use the Island level for your 7th grader, but I think she'll fly right through it, and then you'll be needing the next level anyway. I think a child that age would be better off starting with the Town level, myself. :) We were using GWG with them both but it isn't really sinking in and I love the style of grammar from MCT and am really hoping that it appeals more to them then GWG and FLL has. You really will only need the TMs, not the student books, with the exception of the Practice books, where you'd need both; it's the only consumable. I was watching the thread on youngest used MCT with and I think I am going to plan on using it with my now pre-k kiddo once he hits 1st grade level because I am really liking it way more the most other LA I am seeing out there. :) You know your own dc best, of course, but I cannot imagine using this for my dd6 in first grade. She's still working on reading and writing with fluency--and she's ahead of the curve. I think that the grade recommendations on the RFWP site are pretty right on. But, again, your child, your knowledge, ymmv. ;) thanks in advance! Good luck!
MariannNOVA
Ok so I am on the edge of jumping on the bandwagon  I would like to use this with my 3rd and 7th graders. I have seen several reviews that actually suggest supplementing the writing since it doesn't really lend itself to character development or creative writing. I am not familiar with Writeshop Primary (although, I think I have it here someplace) BUT when you get to Sentence Island (which will be after completing Grammar Island) it should be fine to use that as well. Would be ok to use the island level with a 7th grader even though she needs a lot of remediation? The 3rd grader would be mostly listening in since she also is needing a lot of remediation in LA too. ( we are going through phonics with her right now) ISLAND is the beginning Level so that is probably a good place to start with any student who requires a fair level of remediation. And, the 3rd grader should be able to listen and participate as well - even only listening would be to the 3rd grader's benefit.:) We were using GWG with them both but it isn't really sinking in and I love the style of grammar from MCT and am really hoping that it appeals more to them then GWG and FLL has. Lastly I see on the site that they really recommend getting both the teacher's guide and the student book. Are there any parts of the island level where one could scrimp and not the the teacher's book or are there any parts where you find the teacher's book more valuable to have? Given the choice of the Teacher Book OR the Student Book, you will want the Teacher's Book as all the 'lessons' and 'exercises' are in the Appendix of the Teacher's Book. (And if I had $1. for every time I've had to type that, I would have paid for my own MCT 1000X over.) If the three of you are able to 'share' one book, then the book you want is the Teacher's book; If you cannot share, then a Teacher's Book and a Student Book will do. ADDITIONAL NOTE: You will need Practice Island Teacher and Student Book for your 7th grader (Teacher's Book has the answers). The student practice book is consumable. It doesn't sound to me like your 3rd grader is ready for Practice Island yet -- but you could buy just the Teacher Book and use a white board, chalk board, or do the sentences as narration and then have your student do the 4-level analysis. I was watching the thread on youngest used MCT with and I think I am going to plan on using it with my now pre-k kiddo once he hits 1st grade level because I am really liking it way more the most other LA I am seeing out there. 1st grade is a little young - it is good at that age, if you have it on hand, to use as a read aloud and as something to facilitate discussion with your 1st grader -- that's always a good thing to do, and you can do it with MCT or anything else that is high quality. thanks in advance! My answers are in blue. I'm sure others will have ideas as well. :toetap05: Right now they must be at the pool or tooling around in their new little car or wherever!;) Edited August 4, 2010 by MariannNOVA

Crimson Wife
If your budget permits getting only 1 MCT level, I'd personally go with "town" for your 7th grader and hold off on starting the 3rd grader in "island" for a year.
