KeriJ
I have a K'er and a 2nd grader this year. I'm considering doing science for the first semester (every day) and then history for the second semester. Anyone ever done that before? That way we could really focus on each subject in depth. Just thinking.....
KeriJ
I meant to add that we school through some of the summer making the semesters a little longer
SailorMom
I have heard about others doing this - although it seems they've always had older children. My personal opinion, and this is for my kids' learning styles: They absord more if presented with info over a longer period of time. Math - as an example - even if you spent many hours a day on math - kids can still only absorb so much info all at once. Yours, however, could realy do well with this. We tend to do history every day, and science three days or so a week.
Wheres Toto
I thought about doing this since I found it confusing to my kids trying to do both in one day or each a couple days a week. We weren't able to really get into a topic before switching to the other. When we would try to return to finish up a topic, they would forget what we already did. What I'm doing is switching every week or so. We'll spend a week (or however long it takes) to do a topic in History (usually a SOTW Chapter), then when we are finished exploring the topic we switch to Science. We'll completely do a topic in Science (usually a BFSU lesson) then switch back to History. We keep a notebook for both History and Science and we will look over some of what we did when we switch to remind us of where we left off, although this isn't as important since we're moving on to a new topic. There seems to be less of a problem with them forgetting things this way anyway. Since we are able to take the time to do lots of reading, activities and experiments which really reinforce things - instead of trying to rush trying to do everything in a couple of days and skipping things. Ooh, I like this idea better than the semester idea. Thanks! :) Off to think some more.
