jpklehm
No, you aren't! We will spend some time the week of the 23rd organizing bookshelves and notebooks and supplies. I plan on having the kids organize their own materials this year because I'm trying to hand off more responsibilities to them. Then, the week of the 30th, we'll do some fun stuff - history and science mainly, along with our family read alouds. Then after Labor Day we'll go full bore. Good plan. I like how this gets them slowly but surely into the school year. :) Pam
jpklehm
Last year, we started the day after Labor Day and finished in early May. We'll be doing the same thing this year. If I may ask, how did you do this? This would be ideal for us but I've never been able to do it even though we take very few breaks/vacations. I'm going to look at the calendar again! We're starting the day after Labor Day, as well, Sept. 7. Pam Edited August 5, 2010 by jpklehm
LanaTron
We ususally end up schooling into the summer, and that was fine when my kids were younger. But this year, as I'm looking ahead to high school, I'm trying to start the day after Labor Day and finish by mid-June. I want to actually have a summer break, as my ds wants to work as a counselor at Boy Scout camp.
DawnM
We school year round because we take vacations when the crowds are low and when it is off-season for better rates. This year my boys have had more of a summer break though as there have just been too many things going on. Both of my older boys went to two camps each this summer and I went to a family reunion on the West Coast, so it hasn't been our typical summer. We have started back in full swing though and I am determined to actually finish a full year of school this year and not slack off or go on rabbit trails, and then end up taking 2 years to do a Core. Dawn
Tonia
My plan was to start the day after Labor Day too but dd wants to start earlier! :glare: So we might start the last week of August. We'll see! :tongue_smilie:
HootOwl
Appropriate date to begin the "labor" of another school year . . .
jewel7123
We started the beginning of July. We're in Texas where the summers months are hot, hot hot! I'd rather be able to take off in the Fall and Spring.
Mom0012
We always do a little school over the summer, mostly math and reading, but then I usually start to ramp things up at the beginning of August. I like getting a little ahead now and then it gives us some wiggle room during the rest of the year. This summer has flown by so fast, I haven't really felt like we've had enough of a break yet, so I think we will be waiting until September to get into the full swing of things. oldskool
We are not starting fully until the middle of September. I want to enjoy the quiet parks and museums, go for bike rides, and get in the last of the good weather. Oh...and the quiet shopping malls.:) Lesley
Maddysmom26
Your definately not alone. This will be our first year. I was hoping to start in August. Im in the process of finishing our little house and we are going on vacation the last 2 weeks of august. SO we wont start until Sept. Really hoping that I can get the house done in the next 2 weeks, so we can be in there to start our new journey! I'd hate to have to be finishing a house/moving while Hs'ing our first year, going to college full time and running my business. I might lose my mind! lol;)
Cinder
Now that my ds's are taking classes at a private school we follow their schedule, which follows the public school schedule. So we start Monday, Aug 9, with orientation today (Fri). The public schools just started today in our county, yesterday in the county over, Monday in the next county north. When we homeschooled year-round with no outside classes we started in July and took vacation in the fall. We were usually done by the end of April when the weather started getting nice. lakerks
I always start the day after Labor Day. I guess I've carried that habit over from my prior experiences as both a student and a teacher. It just feels right to me.
lovemykids
We were in the habit of starting school in August, after lightly schooling through the summer. Last year, we got caught up with enjoying our summer (in a new state) and then took a vacation in late summer as well. This year looks like it will be a repeat of last year....so I guess I am changing my ways. :tongue_smilie: I want to enjoy every minute of the summer now. School can wait. I don't even have all of our books yet, gasp!
jenniferlee
We don't really start until the end of September. We live in Oregon and summer never starts until July 4, so I like to have all of September to get my full three months in to enjoy. The weather is usually so nice still. Also, we often go on vacation then because the rest of the world is back in school. I should add, though, that we do some light school throughout the summer. JumpedIntoTheDeepEndFirst
We mostly school year 'round but our start date has varied between roughly Labor Day, October, or even Nov/Dec depending on the year and our situation. I don't think it really matters so long as you meet any attendance reporting needs for your local district and so that you can provide appropriate information on college applications at the end of high school. Catwoman
We start in mid-September, and have never started earlier than September 8th. I always let ds have a bit of time off after the other kids in the neighborhood go back to school. Cat
Dina in Oklahoma
After Labor Day here! :001_smile:
LuvToRead
Originally, I planned to start in September. But, then I realized that August is hot. It's so much easier to start earlier, then to take off a day here and there in October, when the weather is absolutely gorgeous. So, the weather is my only reason for starting in August. sheryl
Everybody seems to be starting so early! I live in Wyoming, we are lucky to have 4 nice months out of the year. I might even post pone starting until sometime in September if the weather stays nice! (meaning no snow, hmmm September around here, good chance of snow!:001_huh:) We would wait if we could ;) but dd has adhd, add. We've learned that it's better for us and for her to homeschool year round. It keeps her "going" and she can recall information more easily b/c it's a carry over. While we technically finished in June, I continued with 3 days of homeschooling only Math and Language as those are the most time consuming....more lesson work for her to complete. We're looking pretty good now. I'll have to create those plans and the schedule that I posted about yesterday to get a better handle on where we stand, but we are definately ahead. I need to keep it that way to finish in May. HTH. Sheryl <><
mommy123
This is our first year to officially start. I'm planning on August 30th. We may decide to go with a more year round approach later on.
Mom22ns
My dd's gym follows the school calendar so we do too. From June 1-Aug 13 (this year) she had gym every day 8-12:30. I don't want to school around that. Ps starts Monday August 16th, so we will too. It gives us a little breathing room to still be ready before summer schedule starts again! lisabelle
We're sticking with the District's schedule with first day of school the day after Labor Day and the last day of school somewhere toward the end of June. Summer is so nice here in the PNW, I just can't see starting any earlier. This schedule will also allow Matt to participate in the summer camps/activities he enjoys.
