FairProspects
I just spent $6 on a pint of dairy-free, soy-free, coconut milk ice cream so that ds wouldn't have to miss out on our family treat, only to have him take one bite and spit it out. Apparently the mint flavor triggered his SPD and his mouth is all tingly (which is intolerable, I guess). :banghead: I can't take it anymore!! What on earth can I feed this child?!? C_l_e_0..Q_c
what's SPD? I'm assuming it's something sensory. My first thought when you said the mouth was all tingly was Oral Allergy Syndrome. And yes, it's intolerable. I can't eat peaches, apples, and cherries because of that, and almonds too. Although I don't react to mint, it is one thing that can be reacted to. I don't like mint but I can tolerate it. Your child may not.
Jean in Newcastle
You eat the rest of the pint. It sounds like you need it! Let's see - we've pureed banana and frozen it: http://www.all-creatures.org/recipes/des-bancream.html Don't know if that is on his approved list, though. Daisy
How about something like this? http://www.rachelwilkerson.com/2010/06/02/coconut-milk-popsicle-recipe/ Of course leaving out anything that wouldn't work for your child.
FairProspects
Hmm, I didn't think about it being a reaction. It might be, although when he does get oral allergic reactions to citrus fruits he usually gets hives on the outside of his mouth, which he didn't this time. I think he just doesn't like the sensation of coolness from mint. I, however, think it is delicious so it just might be mine! Those banana ice creams & popsicles look like a good idea. I was just hoping to find one thing I didn't have to make myself for an allergic kid. This allergy diet is recent and I'm spending hours in the kitchen with kids underfoot and dh working 12 hour days, which is making me a little batty. I'm also fried after spending a fortune at the grocery store for ds's special products, which I know he needs, but why do they have to cost 5 times as much?!? Mom2J112903
:grouphug: BTDT It just plain sucks! J was gluten free from 19 months to 6.7yrs of age in addition to being gluten free we went many years dairy free. Then there was a time in there he was also soy, nut, lemon and flax free. Talk about :001_huh: to feed your child. Food allergies are one thing, add in SPD (Sensory Processing Disorder) and it makes grocery shopping something that you dread every week. :grouphug:
plain jane
I hear ya. :grouphug: One of mine is gluten, soy, dairy, corn, egg, and nut free. :001_huh: Sigh.
naturegirl7
have you tried the vanilla or the coconut flavored coconut icecream? due to my DS's laundry list of food allergies, he can't even have any of the other flavors except those - but we loooooove those! I will add some enjoy life choc chips to it or fruit or maybe some allergen free choc sauce. I have been wanting to try the mint flavor for sooo long - it looks so good on the carton. Hope YOU enjoy it. I hate when we finally find something that is safe and he gets all excited in the store, but when it comes time to try it he freaks out and is too scared to open his mouth (even after the homeopath tests him and okays it!) I just spent $3 on 10 jellybeans, after spending an hour on the phone trying to track down the hidden ingredients and share equipment list to make sure they are safe and then he cries and begs me to eat it instead - only to want to try it the next time we are in the store (and again refuse to eat it at home!) :tongue_smilie: It is amazing how crazy we get when it comes to our kiddos :D
naturegirl7
BTW we are peanut, tree nuts, most seeds, gluten, rice, dairy, soy, eggs, sugar (HFCS and all organic forms too), squash family, nightshade family, and lots of tropical fruits free here :D That is our new improved, shortened list - we added about 10 foods back in the last 6 months Edited August 5, 2010 by naturegirl7
ElizabethB
:grouphug: I am allergic to mint, along with a bunch of other things, it is not fun. I tell people half-jokingly that if it resembles food, I can't eat it. (Today was actually a good food day, I got to eat noodles with sheep cheese, that does resemble food.) Of course, tomorrow I get elk and teff flour and lettuce...
