Parrothead
The Nez is like it looks. Perce is pronounced like that bag women carry - purse.

Mrs Mungo
Thanks! For some reason I had Nez Pierce in my head from a few years back. I may be back for more questions...:D Nez Perce is French, perce means pierce and nez means nose. Maybe that is where you were getting mixed up? Matryoshka
Who knows? Nose piercing, huh? Could be a fun activity for my dd9. :D Except that the Nez Perce never pierced their noses - no one's sure why the French named them that (it's speculated they may have confused them with another tribe that did). If you're not already reading them, the Kaya books are a great resource on the Nez Perce, including the non-fiction Kaya's World.
jld
If you say nay pai® say, do you think you would be understood?
Hillary in KS
If you say nay pai® say, do you think you would be understood? I grew up in Idaho, taught 4th grade state history for many years, and knew several Native Americans in southern and southeastern ID. If you pronounced it "Nay pair-say," honestly, 90% of the people wouldn't know what you were talking about without some context. Locals and tribal members I have met pronounce it "Nez purse."
