We love to listen to FOF radio theater or audiobooks like Weiss' Henty recordings while we are on vacation. We will be taking a trip soon and we will be in the middle of WWI. I'm drawing a blank on literature or history selections. ( I even found a radio theater version of the Battle of Shiloh for the Civil War last year.) Any suggestions?

Are you looking for WWI specifically or anything from that period on? only for older or younger kids?

My sons love Snow Treasure on audio, but that's WWII. Esperanza Rising was set in the depression. Wasn't my favorite book, but good (just a bit depressing).

Honus and Me was a favorite. I forget the exact time period the central figure goes back to, but Honus Wagner played in the early 1900s.

I may come up with more ideas.

I'm looking for WWI because that is where we are in history. I'm looking at the Massie book. IT is a possibility. My children are 15, 13 and 8. I read Lord of the Nutcracker Men and that is a possibility as well. I'm reading Private Peaceful, but I think that will be way too depressing and I don't know if they can take another one where the main character dies in war. (They are studying All Quiet on the WEstern Front.)

How about John Buchan's The Thirty-nine Steps for at least the older two? I listened to a librivox.org recording of it, and it was excellent. Takes place following WWI. Murder mystery with lots of disguises and ramblings around the British countryside. Masterpiece Classic just did a remake of the book, and I was sorely disappointed in it. Check out librivox in general as a great resource for free audiobooks read by volunteers. But realize that some of the readers are just not up to par, imo. I have found some excellent readers, though, and I'd listen to them read an encyclopedia. Just listen to a sample before downloading a whole book.
