and likes kittens but will probably not like horses with pink manes, i.e, nothing dripping with girly-pink. He's 8 but something geared to 6 would probably be better. He is sticking himself with just plain old needle and thread.

I'm not a seamstress and would prefer a kit. Yarn and burlap? Is that what kids do when very little?

Thanks.

Felt is a good start because it's pressed, not woven. If you are worried about the pricking factor, a blunt metal (not those plastic ones) needed would work with felt. You could cut out pairs of shapes and stuff them after he stitches :)

Youngest was given a really cute bear kit (from Joann, I think) when she was 7. She needed some help with the nose---a non-sewing adult could easily have helped.

my boys like making a pillowcase for themselves, a bag for trains or books, a stuffed animal or even clothes for their stuffed animals. really simple. if your son is younger (mine are 8 & 6) prepunching holes in felt is a great beginning. and they have plastic needles too if you'd rather go that direction.

sorry, just saw he's 8! i make my 8yo sew his badges on his scout uniform too.

I had my 5 year old son make xmas ornaments this year.

We pre cut out shapes(circles and reindeer were his choice ) from cookie cutter shapes and I drew with a marker showing where he should sew and leave the space open to stuff them. Then he used scrap material and left over stuffing to fill them with.

Very simple and he made his own gifts at the same time.

Winky Cherry's sewing progression for kids is so cool (at least the first 3 steps that I've read.)

She also worked hard to make it accessible to both genders and has pictures of boys holding projects in every book.

She starts with handsewn felt and then step 2 is a cross stitch sampler on gingham.

I also bought this book after my DD loved the handsewing and I read the rec. here, and I like although we haven't tried a project yet.
