Tell me about drums?

Recommended Posts

My ds13 wants to learn drums. I've found there is someone one town over who teaches. But before I make that call, I'd like to know what I'm looking at. For example, does a student need a full kit (my dh has told me it's called a kit, I'd been calling it a drum set, lol) to start? I know cost will probably be more for me up here, but how much does it cost to start? How much room am I going to need for the drums?

Where does your child keep his/her drums? What do I look for in a teacher? What else should I be considering as I contemplate this?

Thanks so much!

My sons have a drum set (I'm old and call it a set :) ). Now, we have had it for a while so I'm not sure how accurate my prices will be.

My now 19yo started out 5 years ago with an electronic drum pad set that cost around $900-$1100 for the whole set up. I liked it because you could turn the volume waaaaay doooowwwwwn. It looked similar this one here.

We bought him a nice acoustic set- DW is the brand- three years ago for about $4600. It was in the middle price range and had your basic stuff - bass drum, tom-tom, snare, another drum I don't know the name of, and a crash cymbal and high-hat and one other cymbal plus all the stands that hold them, etc. We bought it from Guitar Center. We've been really happy with it. That said, it is LOUD! My boys have their rooms downstairs in the walkout basement and even with the basement door shut - it is very very loud. So I think that is a BIG consideration when thinking about drums. His set is similar to this one here. It really helped to go and really try out the different drums - the sound can be so different from set to set.

I'm sorry I can't help you in looking for a teacher -we live in an extremely rural area and my son taught himself using dvds and what he had learned from 5 years of piano lessons.

It is fun to hear him play; he and his brothers play guitar and piano and they really get going sometimes. Hope this helps a little.
