trisharog
I am obsessing on which theme book to use for DD8 way too much and would love input. I have used IEW theme books for older boys but feel pressure to get it right this year with DD bc I this will be her first formal year writing and likes writing. She will go back to a Classical Christian school the next year and I want this year with her to really count. I had planned to use Fables, Myths and Fairy tales and got feedback that it was not written well . I then tossed around the idea of using All things fun and fascinating. We are starting with Rome in history and am considering The Ancients. Does anyone have comparative experience with "All Things Fun and Fascinating and The Ancients?" Does the Ancients focus mainly on Egypt or are there plenty of lessons also on Greece and Rome? Thanks for the feedback, Trisha
OlgaLA
I also agonized for a while over this same question. I went with All Things Fun and Fascinating for my 3rd grader. So far we like it. I looked at the previews at their site and just by looking at the content The Ancients seems to be more advanced. My DD is 7, and not a very good writer to put it mildly. I hope All Things Fun and Fascinating will work for us.
StephanieF
OlgaLA, that was what I was looking at for my ds7 whose writing is not good either! Is there not enough in the teacher dvds though for a child who is just starting out or is it best to add a student text too? OlgaLA
StephanieF, I have no idea what is on teacher's DVD:blush: For us, the book is enough.
StephanieF
Ah I thought I would have to invest in the whole 6 dvd teachers set which explains IEW before I could use any of their other products. Are you saying that I can just buy the IEW theme books and be ready to go? That would be a saving lol! Stephanie
OlgaLA
I think theme books are all stand-alone, but there probably is much more info on DVDs. To me, All Things Fun and Fascinating is a good trade-off, but we have just started. And I only have the student book. If along the way I feel the need, I may get the teacher's book too, and maybe the DVD course as well, lol.

brownie
I don't think the theme books are stand alone unless you are familiar with the method. We are using Ancients and Fables this year (our 1st year). But I watched the TWSS before beginning (and then sold it). I kept the workbook for reference. I think the workbook itself as a minimum or participation in a coop would be necessary to really understand and appreciate the method. But that's me...I buy the teacher's manual for Singapore math starting with 3rd grade but I never buy teacher's manual for things like spelling and vocab so I'm probaby a middle of the road kind of person.
