Tess in the Burbs
We have moved and left behind my cabinets that held the art supplies and math manipulatives. I bought an Ikea bookcase that has the 8 cubbies but the art supplies don't fit in it. What is minimum for kids? I have a kid who does artsy things for hours every day...we have paints, papers, ribbons, buttons, stickers, stamps, and tons of small things I can't even describe, lol. We have nice pastels, watercolor pencils, oils, canvas. Just piles of stuff she uses. I hate to throw it all out. I put a lot into buckets like the art kits she hasn't finished but it's as high as the new bookcase and the paper buckets are still on the floor in front. What do you think is important for kids to have art wise available to them? This pile of stuff has to get smaller. I still have to figure out where to put the math manipulatives...... lollie010
I hope you get some responses, because I need to stock an art cabinet for three kiddos.
StephanieZ
Since you already have the stuff, and a dd who loves and uses it. . . Can you just take batches and distribute some stashes around the house? Can she be allowed to have some of it in her room? In the kitchen in a bin on the floor of the pantry? Alternatively, you could pack up a box or two and put it away in storage for a few months and rotate supplies through. Personally, I think that it is awesome you have a dd who loves to use it. . . and you already have it. . . so I'd try to find places for it! :)

Bird Girl
I have to say, if you have a kid who uses art stuff every day, then you probably need to keep it. But you don't have to keep all of it in your school room. Would your crafty kid have space in the bedroom for something like this: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S09871292 ? The bins can be pulled out and carried around the house, then put back easily at clean-up time.
ubermomto5
i agree, if it gets used, you should keep it and get rid of something else. i also have an overflowing cupboard in my garage as well as a few shelves in our school closet because my kids constantly draw, paint, use pipe cleaners and on and on. it's a nightmare to corral but i think the rewards far outweigh the trouble and space they consume. if i were freshly stocking a cabinet with nothing i'd start with really good watercolors, markers, pastels and crayons, different kinds of paper and glues, pipe cleaners, beads, colored pencils, and sculpey or something like it. not such a bare minimum is it! edit: you could also just not replenish supplies as quickly as they become used - if you're running low on pipe cleaners, don't buy as big of a package next time, and it will theoretically take up less space! Tess in the Burbs
Thanks :-) Today she gets to pick what stays down in the schoolroom and what is going upstairs to the kitchen area in small buckets. We already have a lot of the rubbermaid buckets with lids so that will work perfect...she can carry it down here to work but it will be stored elsewhere :-) Appreciate your help....you are right, she uses it and will get to keep it all

JMDRAD
Crayons and good markers are what my kids love most, oh and a sharpened #2 pencil. :) I did buy some watercolors, pastels, oils, clay, paints, and a ton of paper for this year. But really, the crayons and markers are mostly what they use.
dragons in the flower bed
My bare minimum would be crayons, colored pencils, markers, watercolors with a few brushes, safety scissors, white glue and several pads of paper, maybe one color, one manila, and one watercolor.
