Jen in NY
Your teen working at the library 10hrs a week or instead running their own piano studio? My daughter is already teaching piano students here in our home, and she's doing a great job. She wouldn't have to add too many students to make a decent "salary" --- more than she could earn in 10hrs at the library, but she thinks it might be better in the long run to work at the library so she'll have some professional references for when she applies for college. What say ye? She definitely can't do both. And she likes the thought of both about the same... one b/c she loves teaching the little ones piano and the other b/c she loves the library and thinks it would be fun working there with people her own age. Thoughts?
Myra
I'd stay with the piano studio. Colleges want to see homeschoolers showing initiative - a way that they used homeschooling in an unique way. And check out the parents of the students she teaches - anyone there that could right a glowing reference to her enterprising skills as a young artist and businesswoman! stephanier.1765
Can she volunteer one afternoon a week at the library? Volunteering always looks good, she'll still make those contacts, and still have time leftover for piano studio.

Murphy101
And don't forget to get Professional references from the parents of her students! Especially the long term students!
Brenda in MA
I would also suggest sticking with the piano lessons, and I agree with the others about finding a parent of one of the students who could write her a nice recommendation letter for college. Volunteering at the library is a great idea as well. Isn't it wonderful to see our young people taking responsibility and doing meaningful work and/or activities?
