Chelle in MO
I received an e-mail w/a file in it that said Mars would be the closest to Earth in August that it has ever been in recorded history. I know there are some astronomers on here...does anyone know if this is true and verifiable? Thanks in advance!
Desert Rat
I received an email like that last year. Does the file have pictures saying Mars would look as big as the moon? If so, it's not true. If Mars appeared as large as the moon, we'd be in big trouble!
kalanamak
If Mars appeared as large as the moon, we'd be in big trouble! I find the Skywatch column in the WP informative and written simply, so I can just "grab" the info. I think they might mention the Mars thing it if were true. We are going to have an interesting Aug, it seems, and it may even be clear here, it being August: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/07/31/AR2010073102913.html
Aubrey
I got an email like that a couple of yrs ago. Turns out, it was technically true: Mars was going to be the closest it had been in...recorded hist, 100 yrs, whatever. But it gets that close *every* yr someone told me later. :glare:

gaillardia
Someone sent me the e-mail about that and I checked it on sky&telescope. Even though you've gotten responses, I just want to tell you about s&t because you are obviously interested in astronomy. You can find out what planets you're seeing and about the meteor showers (I believe there is one this week!!) on that website www.skyandtelescope.com In the eastern sky lately is Jupiter, and with our rinky telescope we have seen four moons. Well, we were excited about it. Check online for local county or city astronomy clubs. They have star parties once a month and most that I've seen online are free to attend.
