coffeefreak
We're doing a research unit this fall (how to look things up at the library, in an encyclopedia, an almanac etc), and I want to find some good, kid-friendly search engines to teach research on the internet. I have infoplease.com, USA.gov, and yahooligans.yahoo.com. Are there any others that you would recommend? I'm going to keep searching, but please let me know if there's any you've used and liked. Thanks! Dorinda
Athome
Post the ones you find so we can all know too.
coffeefreak
This Site http://www.teach-nology.com/worksheets/research/internet/index.html had some great handouts. You have to do a lot of digging, but it's worth it. The Encyclopedia Britannica Site annoyed me. The adult side is free but I didn't find it very user friendly. The kid side is $70 a year! NUTS! AudreyTN
Firefox has this add-on called Kidzui. My kids love it! It's basically a 'kid' internet browser. It only lets them access pre-approved websites. I was playing around with it one day and tried to get on facebook and my blog. It wouldn't let them do either... that's how "strict" it is. You can go in and approve certain websites just on your child's account if you want.

If I activate it, it won't just open the internet anymore, we'll have to enter a password? Thanks! Dorinda

The child has their own account/password and you just open it when they are allowed to have computer time. Otherwise FireFox runs normally. Does that make sense? coffeefreak
Audrey, That is a great site! I especially love that I can block sites for free! I did a couple of searches and it works really well! It came up with good, reliable sites for her to use as resources. Thanks for the help! I think their favorite part is changing the avatar.
