Children's version of Plutarch

I never was able to make a decision when my oldest covered Ancients so I ended up not getting any :001_huh: but do not want to replay the same mistake with my next.

I'm considering one of these 3 versions of Plutarch's works to read aloud in the fall. Which would you choose? Also, what ages/grades are each of these works best geared towards?

The Children's Plutarch (both Tales of the Romans and Tales of the Greeks) - F.J. Gould

Plutarch's Lives for Boys and Girls - W. H. Weston

Our Young Folks' Plutarch - Rosalie Kaufman

Sadly, I must admit on this classical forum that I have not read any of the original works  (still working through my WEM reading list) so I need to rely on the Hive's wisdom for this decision. :leaving:

My daughter and I tried the originals. Frankly, Plutarch had a serious case of literary diarrhea. That man knew how to ramble. If something could be said in 20 words, he'd manage to say it in 200.

The great value is his insight into character. That you can probably get from a good translation for children. But PLEASE, don't feel guilty about not reading him. If you've got a hankering for the writings of some Roman dude, pick up Ovid. :D

I have Rosalie Kaufman's Our Young Folks Plutarch. My sons read it independently. We enjoy it. It is not too difficult to read. Just to tell you, I have heard Susan Wise Bauer speak in the past. She encourages that a child should read a watered down version of the classic just to understand what the story is about. So once the child is older and reads it in the orginal form, it makes sense.

Blessings,

Karen
