sonnie777
I hear how this curriculum is fun and I have seen scripture on the website with certain activities. Do you like all science, math, and language arts? Is this curriculum biblically based? Why or why not do you like it? Specifically Kindergarten:) Edited August 2, 2010 by sonnie777
nukeswife
The McRuffy homeschool curriculum is not biblically based, in fact there is nothing religious in it at all that I've come across. Many of the separate reading books listed under "McRuffy books" on the website are religious but the curriculum as far as I can tell is completely secular. I'm not sure what activities you looked at on the website that you found scripture in? I've used McRuffy phonics, math and science K and have come across nothing religious. That's a big reason I use it, I'm an atheist and don't want a religious curriculum. It's been about 3 years since I used the science, but I don't remember anything with scripture or religion of any kind in it. It is a fun curriculum that includes games to play. It's colorful without being over the top. The pages have a good amount of work, but aren't overwhelming. The customer service is excellent, and the author Brian Davis is quick to respond to questions and very helpful. I'm a Christian and would love for it to be biblically based but it's not. What I like about it, is it's coloful and fun. My Lance is my last K student and I want to have fun too:D

There is still the spring specials and at the bottom, there are books with scripture and scripture memory cards, etc...:001_smile:
nukeswife
That's what I thought you may be looking at, those are the only things I know of that are religious at all. None of that is in the curriculum though.
BatmansWife
We are using McRuffy K Phonics, Color Math and Science and love it. As the others have already said, there is nothing religious in it at all.
Guest
This is one of those programs where the name has totally turned me off. Maybe since so many people have been talking about it I'll have to go take a peek....
BatmansWife
Krazzymommy, now I know how you got your name. LOL!!!! Just kidding, really! I know what you mean. It wouldn't have been my name choice either. And, I wonder if people ever get it confused with McGuffey (is that how you spell that??). Anyway, the main character is Ruff McRuffy, a dog. I think you should at least check it out. There's lots of samples at the website and you can request a free catalog too. http://mcruffy.com/

I am looking at math, ela, and science...:001_smile: Is the math spiraling? Is the science a lot of experiments? Is the ela hands on, worksheets, etc... Devotional Soul
We just finished McRuffy K phonics and math and had a fun year with it. It is made by a Christian, but is secular. There is one line in the K phonics tm introduces the word sin and says: "What is a sin? What does God do when we ask to be forgiven of our sins?" It can easily be left out or substituted with a different definition. Other than that, the K phonics and math are completely secular. When you look at McRuffy 3rd grade LA, there are two versions available, one secular and one with Bible references in the readers. Here is what is says for the 'Public School' version: http://www.mcruffy.com/3rd-grade-phonics.htm The SE public school edition is nearly identical to our original SE version, except stories have been edited to eliminate scripture references. The Book of Matt books are edited and printed as seven paperback readers, making a total of 30 books in the set. This edition is also suitable for home school programs looking for a secular curriculum. Note: All other grade levels on this website are appropriate for public, private or Christian schools, therefore, only one edition is offered for levels K, 1, and 2. The math is spiral and each lesson has some hands on activity first, and then a related workbook page. The games are fun. I thought it was a nice introduction to math. The phonics has hands on stuff like cut and paste, card, and board games, and funny readers. I really like McRuffy because it is very easy to use. I think it made me a better teacher. Each lesson clearly gives objectives, preparation, a small version of the workbook page, and is lightly scripted. Other than getting the games, cards, or reader needed for the lesson, it is very 'open and go', quick, and effective. Ruff McRuffy is a dog that I think was created by the author. At first, I thought it might have been the 'take a bite out of crime' detective dog McGruffy, but it's not. And people have mixed it up with McGuffey readers in reviews at homeschoolreviews.com. Ruff McRuffy is a funny, camping, cab driving dog that even rides a mule! If anyone is interested, I am selling McRuffy K phonics and math with everything except for the consumable workbooks, now that we're all done. :) Edited August 2, 2010 by Devotional Soul
