MommyThrice
I think I have a working plan, but I'm not sure I know what a 9th grader should be capable of. This child is a little on the lazy side, but he loves speech & debate (we're taking a one-yr break) so he enjoys political, current-events things... he wants to be an attorney. Reading and writing are his strengths, math and science are not. He chose the online writing class himself in order to drop latin. Does this seems reasonable? Math: Jacobs Geometry AND finish Alg.I, then start Alg. II Great books study together (using Notgrass spine, Omnibus I & Gileskirk lectures): Epic of Gilgamesh The Odyssey (using the Teaching Co. lectures) Herodutus Histories Plutarch (4 characters) Livy History of Rome Julius Caesar, Shakespeare Josephus (excerpts) City of God (excerpts) Writing: work through New Oxford Guide to Writing (with mom) Spring research paper Veritas Press online writing class (his choice) Science: Online astronomy w/Scholars Online Logic: Traditional Logic I and II Economics-in-a box (fall semester) Constitutional Law online(spring) We are going to continue with Vocabulary from Classical Roots and he's working through the Teaching Co. How to Be a Superstar Student, but those don't take much time. Is this workable? Am I missing anything? Teachin'Mine
Just a thought, if he's not strong in math, why not just complete Algebra I and then start Geometry when he's finished. Doing both at the same time might be too much for someone stronger in English, history, etc..
DebbS
It looks like 6 good academic credits to me (or maybe a bit more with the vocab & superstar student) You might want to add something like gym in there for another 1/2 credit.
MommyThrice
He is starting a running club with some kids in the neighborhood. I think if they run 3x/week thay can earn a PE credit. That's how other athletic clubs in my area work. The geometry was just to keep him busy over the summer, but he really likes it. For some reason, it doesn't seem like "math" to him. We're using Jacobs and its very logic-oriented. I wanted to just finish Alg. I and then concentrate on geometry, but he really wants to get started on Alg. II because his friends are already there. We have the time to go slowly if its a problem. Thanks for the input. High school doesn't seem so simple to plan!
Teachin'Mine
It sounds like math might be more of a strength too. :)
