elfinbaby
I'm using CW for Olders this year and I really want to use AG w/it but it's going to run $120. Ugh. I'm trying to make darn sure this is what I want before I spend the $$. I can get Harvey's cheaper or another program for that matter. #1 Is it tremendously thorough like it advertises? I love that idea. DS has a great background in grammar already. He's going in 6th. I need a program that is challenging. Thanks!
mazakaal
Someone else asked a similar question in the last few days. You should read those responses as well. In my opinion, it's worth it. I struggled to cough up the money for it last year, but I've been very happy with the results for my 12yo. And I figure that when you consider that it will last 3 years, it's a reasonable cost, only $40/yr.
Stacy in NJ
AG is a complete program. It can be used over two or three years rather than just the one that is typical. It's one of my favorites, so I'm a bit biased and belive it's worth every penny. ETA: Can you look for it used? Try the Sale board. You need only the student workbook and the teachers manual. elfinbaby
I know it's reasonable over the 3 yr. period it just hits hard when you pay that wad up front. I keep trying to get it used - would love too! I think you must have to sit all day refreshing the for sale board - I always just barely miss it when it comes up for sale. If it's worth it, we'll use it. I really do like the way it's laid out and what it offers.
Mallory
I haven't actually seen AG, so I can't help you there. BUT, there is so much grammar in CW Older Beg. even if you don't do another program you will be spending lots of time on grammar. AND the Harvey's pages are already scheduled for you. AND you spend so much time doing grammar work already with CW that the short length of the Harvey lessons is nice. I have been very interested in AG, but I am glad we didn't add it to the year we did Older Beginners. That is a tough course. Maxim looks like it will be much easier and maybe a better year to spend more time on grammar.
elfinbaby
That's helpful and I'm going to take it into consideration. It's not like I don't have a shelf full of grammar books:tongue_smilie: Back to the calculator!
elfinbaby
BTW, is Harvey's scheduled w/Older Beginners? I don't have my workbooks yet.
siloam
BTW, is Harvey's scheduled w/Older Beginners? I don't have my workbooks yet. Yes, if I remember right the days correlate to the CW work, though I had regular Homer.... I prefer AG, because I personally do better with the AG sequence. I don't like starting with the subject and predicate that Harvey's and most programs teach. For me it was worth it, but if you are already good at grammar and fine with starting there, then Harvey's should work fine. Using the regular paced Homer I could half the lessons in AG, and still stay on schedule to complete the parts needed before we reached them in Homer. With OB I would guess you need to do a whole lesson a day, because the pace is so much more accelerated. You probably also need to do Season 1 and 2 back to back, but I think you could wait on season 3. Heather
Mallory
Yes, Harvey's is planned in the student workbook. Harvey's isn't that challenging, but by the end of CW Older you have to diagram and parse every word in some tough sentances. I wonder if you rephrased your question if you might get other people who used AG and CW Older? Because, even unseen, I do think AG is a great program. I just don't think it is worth your money with Older Beg.
