home4school
At my expo yesterday, I was flipping thru SOTW4 and thought it had enough in it to use to round out our American history (1850-Modern). Now that I'm home and can't see it again, I'm start to wonder if its worth the expense. I liked the outlining and the cards and such. We're using Jen's Am Hist 2, but my boys do not like lapbooks and since they're 6th & 8th, I really want to work on outlining, writing, etc. What 'cha think? Order or not? Thanks, Kim
mazakaal
Personally, though I love SOTW, I wouldn't get volume 4 just to do the lessons on American history. The book has 42 chapters, but each chapter covers two topics. A quick glance at the table of contents found 22 out of 84 sections that covered American history. It might make a good supplement, but not a full year's American history curriculum imho.
home4school
I was thinking of using it to supplemental the Guest Hollow Am Hist 2, since my boys don't like lapbooking and such. I thought we could use those snippets throughout SOTW to work on outlining and writing. It seems a lot of Am History from 1900 til now is really a lot of world history. I'm just wondering if I want to spend that much just to supplement, but it would be a great chance to outline from a good source text. Plus, I loved the review cards in the back. I could add to the ones that we'd be using. And just loved the ones for identifying Japanese aircraft. My boys would think that was neat. Well, they probably wouldn't either.:glare: I just don't know. Money's tight. But, it looked good. Good enough?
Jilly
I think it would be worth it because so much of modern American history is tied to world history. Even if a chapter is not specifically American it will probably tie into the history you are working on in some way. I would only question whether SOTW is meaty enough for your kids since they are older. If it was me I would probably look into alternative choices. mazakaal
Hmmmm. I don't know. I understand what you're going through, though. There are so many things that look like they would be a great addition/supplement. It's hard to choose. It is a fabulous book. I guess it's just a matter of whether you can sqeeze the money.
