stephanier.1765
Today I got a letter from the county stating that the stipulations for the Virtual Academy that said students could not participate in the virtual academy because they had previously been homeschooled or in private schools has been reversed. Other than this tidbit, the letter is pretty empty of details. Does anyone know what's going on? What virtual school do they mean? It's definitely not FLVS. The letter head is Duval Virtual Instruction Academy but with the county's school building address. Color me confused, Stephanie Edited July 31, 2010 by slr1765
Renee in NC
Today I got a letter from the county stating that the stipulations for the Virtual Academy that said students could not participate in the virtual academy because they had previously been homeschooled or in private schools has been reversed. Color me confused, Stephanie I don't know - our county is still listing the "must have been in ps" requirements on their website. I went to the Duval website and it says that it is open to all. I had heard that this was a possibility last spring, but hadn't heard anything else. On the FL DOE website it still says must have been a ps student, so I am not sure what is up. stephanier.1765
Well I shot off an e-mail to person who sent the letter asking for details. All I got back was a short message letting me know there is an orientation meeting on the 9th. I need way more details than that before I haul my rear end downtown during rush hour. I just want to know what's going on because I like to know what all my options are regardless if I take advantage of them or not. mom2att
Hi Stephanie--I am also in Duval and got the same letter today. It is my understanding that the districts are coming up with their own virtual programs to compete with FLVS. They get no funds coming their way when students are enrolled in FLVS since a homeschooler retains their status as a homeschooler and not a public school student working at home. They had this with K-12 Virtual and Connections Academy, but the state said only students who spent the previous year in a brick & mortar public school were eligible. The district wants to reach out to homeschoolers and get them enrolled in their program so that they can count them as public school students and bring in the subsequent state money. I have heard Brenda Dickinson of HEF speak on this, and she has some valuable info on her website which explains things much more clearly than I am able to do. http://www.flhef.org/library/113-everything-you-to-want-to-know-about-floridas-virtual-programs

That's exactly what I needed to know. The diploma option is definitely interesting since we are starting 9th grade this year. However the fact that it could affect participating in school sports or dual enrollment could definitely be a factor for us since both are important to my son. Thank you again! WHY do we live in this county that has/does/advocates nothing for our kids? Grrrrr) FLVA (thru k12.com) has the ps requirement but what is the middle school ++ one... FLVS? I'm not sure about that one... ::sigh::
