RegGuheert
Since we are discussing high school class ranking, I thought it might be interesting to also consider college class ranking. DS20 is at VA Tech and the administrative computer system reports to him his current ranking, at least within his major, but perhaps overall also. (It KILLS him that he is not first, BTW! :D) So here is the question: What is the significance of the college class ranking? I can see that it would be nice to put it on a resume if you were ranked first or second. (In fact, I have hired individuals who have had such information on their resumes.) But what about beyond that? Is this generally used for consideration for scholarships? How about entrance into grad school? Medical school? (Based on what we have learned: No.) Law school? And how do you find out? Does the school report this information on their transcript? Do they report it in some other way to some organizations? And for MeanestMomInMidwest: No, I was not at the top of my class at EITHER college I attended, so this is why I do not know about college class ranking! ;)
Hannah C.
My college doesn't even have a class ranking - at least not the way public high school did. Those with a 3.9+ GPA graduate summa cum laude, 3.7-3.89 graduate magna cum laude, and 3.4-3.69 graduate cum laude. There is a special award given for the two graduating seniors with the highest overall GPAs, but the valedictorian is elected by the senior class out of a pool of people with a certain GPA or higher. I highly doubt anyone would care about a college class ranking, but they will care about the summa/magna/cum laude awards!
emubird
I thought class ranking was just to make people feel bad.
