A question about dictation

Recommended Posts

When you do dictation exercises, like in WWE, what do you do about spelling? I know you correct for capitalization/punctuation. My dd always asks me how to spell words. Do I tell her or let her try to spell it herself first? If she tries to spell it herself, do I correct it right away, or after she is done with the whole sentence.

Thanks!

If it is something completely outside of his experience, I just spell it. If I think he can pick it up *quickly* using finger and verbal hints a la SWR, that is what I do. I have a hard time letting him go through and correct because he would be a little "crushed" to have left an error on the paper. A different personality or level of maturity, I would do it differently.

I have the kids do their best to spell the words on their own. I figure it's good spelling practice for them. If I find a word spelled wrong when they are done I look at whether or not the word is just plain spelled wrong, or did they make a good attempt on the spelling by sounding it out carefully and using the phonics rules.

My son spelled a word incorrectly on an assignment yesterday but he had spelled it the way one would think it should be spelled based on phonics rules. We discussed that and went over the correct spelling.

I have my dd spell it aloud as she writes it. Then I can stop her before she actually writes a wrong letter and misspells the word altogether. To let her spell it wrong, will just prolong her struggles with spelling! Plus, I think it's forcing her to be careful, to slow down and think about what she is writing. She is not a natural speller - and its just easier for her to spell phonetically than to try to think through spelling rules and patterns.
