Blue Hen
We're thinking of a trip to Montreal & Ontario. What should we see? What should we make sure that we do not miss? Thanks! Carole
sarawatsonim
Where in Ontario are you going or would like to go? Ontario is huge and the variety of things to see are spread out from one end to the other. It can take a couple of days to drive across the entire province. Blue Hen
We have 3 or 4 weeks to do our traveling. I'd like to visit Ottawa but then head west. Tent camping is the way I'd like to go but on this trip it isn't essential.
sarawatsonim
Ottawa is beautiful (I was born there). There is tons to do there and their tourism site has all the listed things to see and do and what dates and times they run for. Ottawa is also the closest city in Ontario to Montreal so it would be easy travel that way. Traveling west from there would take you towards Toronto which has an overabundance of things to do. Along the way there, there are a lot of camp grounds to choose from if interested. I live in between those two major cities, so we go one way or the other when we want some cultured city life.;) I am more familiar with Toronto though because we go there more frequently. I'm not sure what your tastes are entertainment wise, but Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto are extremely multi cultural and they have many different festivals and celebrations during the warmer months. C_l_e_0..Q_c
Montreal has many festivals although the best ones are already over. When will you be here? Things to see in Montreal: - take a tour of the Old Port, or walk it with a guidebook - Musée des Beaux Arts - Jardin Botanique is great for a picnic. Check out the Chinese garden and the Japanese Garden - Unfortunately, the Biodome and Insectarium are closed due to a strike. If you have access to a car, you can go to the Ecomuseum instead. - Walk up the Mont-Royal - St Joseph Oratory , even if you're not Catholic. It's huge. You might want to skip the visit to see Brother André's heart. It's morbid and you don't really see anything anyway. http://www.saint-joseph.org/en_1001_index.php The gardens are very nice though - Eat anywhere with a terrasse on a nice day. - if you're not Young Earth, this might be fun to do: http://www.mcgill.ca/redpath/ressources/buildingstones/ - On a nice day, if you have kids, you might want to drive south and go to the Safari Park. They have deals available with local campsites. So you might want to make one of those campsites your base. I've heard good things about this KOA: http://www.koamontreal.com/ Do *not* go to KOA West of Montreal. http://www.koa.com/where/qc/56103/ it's way too close to the highway.
