Those of you that keep Grades...

Recommended Posts

I have been writing the grade on the paper, then keeping graded papers for a whole quarter to go through before I did the quarter's averages.

This year, I got these planners for the kids. Each subject daily block has 3 little boxes in the uppper right corner. These will be to check off that it is done and record grades. I'm going to color code the grades, blue- daily, black- quizz, red- test or project.

I like the color coding idea.

But how do you decide how much each is worth? Like how do you ave the homework and quizes /tests? to get the final grade. that is what Im trying to figure out. ?

It really varies by subject. I look through my materials and see if there are recommended percentages.

CLE, for instance, has 2 quizzes and 1 test per light unit. The company recommends tests counting half the grade, with quizzes making up the other half. We use that for LA and Math.

My ds's science this year, is all hands-on experiments. He will have notebook pages to do. I will be looking over those and giving more of an effort grade, so that will be my opinion. I will take all those each quarter and just average them.

My dh teaches school and has this grading system:

Major Tests: 55%

Daily/Quizzes: 30%

Final Exam: 15%

He sometimes has them do projects. Depending on the amount of work required, he usually counts them as 2 quizzes or 1 test grade.

I have an only child -- so his grades are EZ to compute on paper and calculator. I document the grades on a report card that goes in his permanent "cumulative" student file.

It just depends on how you want the grade to reflect. For example, my son's math grade, it is:

25% - Daily Work

25% - Drills

50% - Tests

Another example is History & Science (especially in the lower grades) is pretty straightforward -- 100% in all areas.

I used so many methods of keeping records from actual grade record books, to charts, excel, and now that son is in high school, I simply use lined paper. The official record is his transcript.

When I taught full time and had 30 students, I'd use a grading software. HTH
