3lilreds in NC
I have cannisters that match my Pfaltzgraff dishes, and they are pretty, but they don't seal tightly. I don't have anything in them because flour/sugar/etc. get icky in them. They are taking up counter space that I don't want to allot to them if they can't be useful. Does anyone have creative uses for these things? What about a cookie jar? Same deal: no airtight seal. I suppose cookies would go quickly enough if I ever baked any... vonfirmath
I got them for my wedding but rapidly got rid of them because I could not come up with a use that justified the space they took up. (Two years is rapidly around here!)

If you really wanted to use them, you could put the item in a zipper bag inside the canister, that way you could open/close them as needed. Or store a food in them that doesn't need to be kept sealed like oatmeal. Otherwise use them to store things like cookie cutters, extra silverware that you don't need out everyday, but use occasionally, odd kitchen utensils that clog the drawers, misc lids for coffee cups/water bottles/small bowls, that get separated from their mate. Brenda in FL
I've used canisters without seals for years. I use ziploc freezer bags in them and store flour and sugar. It just occurred to me the other two are empty and I should utilize them!! Anyway - I've never had a problem with bugs or humidity and this is mostly in Florida where those things are common! What pattern are your canisters? There's a big market for pre-made in China Pfaltzgraf on ebay if you did want to get rid of them. (And if they happen to be Gazebo - I'd be interested!) CalicoKat
I have them too, Flour, Sugar, Cookies, Coffee, and Tea. We just started using the Coffee canister for k-cups. But it's the first time in 17 years they've been used. :) The Tea one I've always used for tea bags. The rest were on a counter until I got tired of cleaning the dust. Now they're in a cabinet but they're just taking up space. I think I ought to ebay them. Mine's the Yorktowne pattern. I wonder what they'd go for. fairfarmhand
I stash Easter and halloween candy in them. Also odds and ends...you know weird screws that show up...odd keys that you will only figure out what they go to AFTER you toss them....that kind of thing. jazzyfizzle
YES. I just bought a huge beautiful glass one to store flour in, only to find out once we were home (25 miles away) that it has no seal. :cursing: I so want to use it!

I have thought about taking them to Replacements on my way by sometime but haven't been that motivated. I will check it out on Ebay and see. I have Tupperware containers for my flour, sugar, etc. I don't know that I'm inspired to use the cannisters. This will sound silly, but they don't go very well with my new counter tops, either. I didn't have them out at my old house, but clearly my MIL found them while they were unpacking and I wasn't here yet because there they sit. I think they will have to go. If I can't get motivated to deal with Ebay they will go in the box for the next Good Will run. If I *loved* my dishes and wanted to keep them forever I might try keeping them, but honestly, I'm ready for new dishes too. :D
Sebastian (a lady)
I used to have Pfaltzgraff canisters until we broke all the matching dishes. I also lived in an area with big humidity and bug problems. So the canisters had things like bags of coffee, packets of artificial sweetner and packets of cocoa. Now I would put granola bars in the largest so the kids could grab those. Maybe bags of dried fruit into another. Or packets of instant oatmeal and breakfast drink. All the things that come in bags that don't store that well in the cupboard.
3lilreds in NC
There's a thought - granola bars and such. I'm trying to keep snacks to things like fruit & veggies because there are those of us in my house with very little self control where food is concerned (and I'm one of them). I will have to think about that though - maybe packages of nuts or trail mix could go in them. Thanks for the idea!
