Old Dominion Heather
What are your best pirate party ideas for a five-year-old's birthday party? I've got some good ideas, but I'm sure you guys have some wonderful ones as well. We will have about 10 boys ages 4 to 6, with 8yo and 11yo helpers. Party will be 2 hours long. Truscifi
Make treasure maps and have them hunt for treasure. Maybe you could make goody bags to be the treasure, so they get to take it home.

CathyT
Cut up bigger t-shirts and have the kids decorate them with fabric markers as pirate shirts -- jagged edges for the sleeve and bottom and give them pieces of rope for a belt (that can be the take home instead of goodie bag) Make eye patches treaure hunt with a map or bunch of maps - hide gold chocolate coins in a treasure box? or boxes? there could be as many maps as kids with different x marks the spots so everyone has to find their own treasure paint the treasure boxes (find them at Michael's for about $1 each) once they are found play some pirate games - tug of war? adapt other games like duck duck goose to something more piratey
NanceXToo
If you can find a parrot template or coloring page online that you can copy and cut out, the kids can decorate or color their parrots, and glue them to a clothespin, which can then attach to their shirt collars over by the shoulder, so they can have parrots on their shoulders. Kathleen in VA
Here's a nifty cake: http://www.tasteofhome.com/recipes/Treasure-Chest-Birthday-Cake I tried to make it a few weeks ago and it came out so-so, but I'm not all that artsy-craftsy. Still, I like the idea of it.
Bug's Mom
One of the older kids could put tattoos on the party guests. This was a big hit when dd had a pirate party.
NanceXToo
Oh and you could get face paints at a place like Michael's... maybe even Walmart.... and look up "pirate face painting" online and do it, it's pretty simple to face paint a bandanna, eye patch, whiskers and a scar. BritAnnia
Write up a bunch of pirate nametags and each child gets one as the party begins. ie:For a boy named Billy - Blackbeard Billy. Birthday boy is Captain "child's name". Everyone must talk like a pirate, including parents. Even better if parents are cabin boys for the day, doing the Captain's bidding :) Treasure hunt for sure... all together or in teams. X marks the final spot but have the map lead to a few places where extra clues are found before finding the X. Sandboxes are fun for hiding treasure. Peg-leg relay race. Really just hopping to a certain point and back again. With a parrot on their shoulder? Even better! Depending on how messy you want to get... two sailing ships cut out of cardboard, one for each team to hide behind. Water balloon "Cannon ball" fight. lynn
I made balloon swords for all the boys at my ds pirate party. My neighbor who always out does everyone was able to get some refrigerater boxes and made pirate ships out of them. The boys had a water balloon fight between the two ships. She also sent the invitations in bottles she painted black.
Sasharowan
A friend had a pirate party for her son when he was about that age. She got either $.50 or $1.00 in pennies, scattered them around the backyard and set them loose to find "treasure".
