Do you put on your dc's transcript that they completed Geometry--if so how do you write it down?

 

I am thinking about having ds do TT Geometry through this summer next year--that is what I had oldest ds do.

Currently I have: Algebra 1, algebra 2 with geometry, Pre- calculus 1 (geometry, trig. ,algebra 3), pre-calc 2 (trig, algebra 4), calculus.

The pre calc. courses are the advanced math book - we covered it in 3 semesters - it is suggested to cover it in 3-4 semesters. In my course description I included geometry as a separate course - explaining that a full credit of geometry is given after completion of pre-calc.1. I also put a footnote on my transcript briefly stating the same. Check the Saxon site under faq and they have a good explanation of this. I have heard that saxon will send you a letter of explanation to have if you ask. I thought of doing this and including it with the transcript and course description when ds applies to colleges.

Because my ds completed Algebra 1 at such a young age, I had him do a separate geometry course before moving on to Algebra 2, so he will have a separate credit. I basically didn't want him completing Calculus in 10th grade and 'forcing' more advanced math on him for the 4 credits colleges want to see, OR having him 'forget' his advanced math by the time he gets to college, so we slowed down a tad.

 

Another reason I did it this way is that while Geometry is covered, it does take several years to actually complete the course because it's spread out among several texts (as Barb laid out). I didn't want to gamble on a possible switch from Saxon to something else and leave ds without a complete geometry credit.

 

As it turns out, we *are* switching this year (no problem with Saxon, I just didn't want to commit 3 or 4 semesters to the Advanced Math in case ds wanted to take math at the cc) , so I'm happy we did it the way we did.

I also had dd do a separate geometry course, Houghton-Mifflin, to slow down her progress in math. We'll be listing it separately on her transcript. Not sure how to slow it down at this point as she wants to go full steam ahead. :tongue_smilie:

I saw this on another thread last night, but now I can't find the thread. What Saxon suggests is giving 1 credit for Alg I and 1 credit for Alg II. After finishing the Adv Math book through lesson 70, giving 1 credit for Geometry with Advanced Algebra. Then, after finishing the Advanced Math book, giving 1 credit for Trig and Pre-Calculus. Also, some suggest that if you are going to do a separate geometry course to wait until after Alg II so the student will not forget the algebra. I am not planning on having our children take a separate geometry course. We will just take 2 years for advanced math (ds will finish it by the end of 10th), and then we will move o to Calculus.

As an fyi there are many ps that do not offer a seperate Geometry course. If you wanted to you could list Algebra 1 w/ geometry and Albebra 2 w/ geometry to show that the student did cover Geometry. I know back when I was in school they stopped doing Algebra, Geometry, Trig, but instead did Course 1, 2 then 3 and that is how it appeared on my transcript. Math programs go in and out of style very quickly around the country. Most colleges will require kids to take Math placement tests unless they do well on the SAT/ACT no matter what courses are listed on their transcript.
