NorthwestMom
Posting for a very anxious friend... are there free online public schools available in Illinois, like K12? I can't tell from K12's site if it is free in Illinois or not. My friend really needs the comprehensiveness of an onine school, and free is the only price that works. TIA for any advice! JFSinIL
Not that I know of. City of Chicago may have one - since I am not in Chicago I do not know. There is NO required oversight or paperwork to homeschool in Illinois.

dirty ethel rackham
I don't know of any free online schools. Heck, the public schools are not free, considering all the fees families have to pay. Plus, the state is so far behind in paying its bills that our local school districts are owed millions of dollars for the 2009-2010 school year. There is the Illinois Virtual School, which is pricey. Some school districts choose to pay for classes from there if they cannot provide that opportunity at their school. But that would be for enrolled students only. In IL, we are considered private schools. Since that is the case, we don't get money from the state. On the positive side, no money means no strings attached. prairiebird
Not only that, I've noticed that some of the homeschool groups I've run into in this state make a very broad distinction between homeschooling and public-school-at-home. In the last area we lived, you could not join the co-op if you were part of one. Their reasoning was that Illinois is a rather easy state to homeschool in, with no reporting needed. However, if there are more and more cyberschools introduced where the $$ comes from the state-or public school at home- , IASA might push for curriculum reviews or testing from the homeschoolers wanting freedom with their homeschooling. Sorry, I get a ton of 'warning' emails in some of my yahoo groups about legislators wanting us all to conform. Would your friend consider using a free online guide like AO or something? I did that for a while when I first started, and I'm still homeschooling in Illinois with a very low budget. I'm always wide-eyed at what people can provide for their kids on the forums because I'd love to have a budget over a couple hundred total!
