What does 'rep you' mean?

Recommended Posts

We used to have a system where you could give each other green good reputation squares for a particularly good post. But as many other things, it started to turn into a junior high popularity thing, and was taken away. Sometimes if someone writes a particularly good post I will tell them that I am sending them a "good rep" point their way or will say that I wish I could "rep" them.

There used to be a system that people could give each other a rep point. It was supposed to help identify the posters who had a a lot of good things to say. It was a way to slap someone on the back and say "wow, what a great comment/post/idea what-have-you". The system was abused, and people started giving each other rep, just to build the scores of their buddies. The system was seen as a waste, created hurt feelings of some people (typically those who didn't have many points), and was removed.

People could also leave bad rep, but didn't have to sign their name. This created even more issues, as posters got hurt in the process. It really made the board have a middle-school feel to it at times. There were the popular kids and the not-so-popular, the bullies and the victims.

A lot of us didn't really care about it, but some really were getting singled out and picked on, by people who could hide behind an anonymous slam. It was a good idea to deactivate the feature.

Now, rep is only used to give feedback after a sale/purchase/swap.

What a shame. Sounds indeed like a good idea it was removed. One would expect more from intelligent adults.

Yeah, and now they have taken away our gold stars as well. How in the world am I supposed to know if I am doing a good job without some kind of outside validation? ;)
