joannqn
I constantly have sinus congestion. It used to be so bad that I had chronic sinus infections and ear infections. Then I had surgery, which helped some, but didn't fix the problem completely. I've been somewhat to fully congested for a few months now. Then one day last week, I decided to have a glass of Emergen-c (acai berry flavor) and noticed that night that my nose was completely clear for the first time in forever. The next day I was a bit congested again. I drank more Emergen-C and my sinuses cleared up for 10 hours or so. I've done this about six times now and each time it clears my sinuses for just under half a day. Any idea what it is about Emergen-C that works so well as a decongestant (ingredients at the link)? Actual decongestants don't work anywhere near as well, and I know it isn't just the vitamin C because I've been taking 1,000mg of that daily for a while now without the same effect. Jean in Newcastle
Quercetin - it is a natural anti-inflammatory and will shrink the tissues.
joannqn
Cool, thanks! Looking it up, recommended supplemental dosage is 100-250mg three times a day. Emergen-C only has 1mg. Do you still think it's the quercetin? Wondering if taking it as a supplement would do more good than the Emergen-C...especially since I have other inflammatory issues. Jean in Newcastle
I take 1000 mg of Quercetin a day as a separate supplement. I used to take 2000 mg (1000 in the am and 1000 in the pm) but a lot of my inflammatory problems have gotten better. ETA - not sure exactly if this is it but it was the only thing I could see on the ingredients list that seemed possible.
joannqn
You take that much? The link I read said that there have been reports of kidney damage when more than a gram is taken. It also says not to take it if you are pregnant or nursing...of course, everything says that.

iammommy
Quercetin - it is a natural anti-inflammatory and will shrink the tissues. Do you know if people who are treated for high blood pressure can take this? I'm thinking of suggesting it to my DH who suffers from regular and severe sinus infections. Thanks! nan

I am really struggling with the inflammation in my SI joints, and I wonder if Querecetin might be worth a try. I'll have to do some reading when I get home from baseball tonight... We've used it for joint and for sinus inflammation because those are our two biggest problems. I also take fish oil for joint inflammation.
