JoyfulMama
are they rough as sandpaper, or soft and fluffy? Is it possible to get soft, fluffy towels on a clothes line? I've never used softener - always vinegar. Yet still, I feel like I am using a loofah AFTER my shower. Who has the secret to soft towels dried outside???:bigear:
Pata
:lurk5: Wanting to know this too, as we don't have a dryer and I haven't had fluffy towels for almost two years :glare:.
farmgirlinwv
After you line dry them, place them in the dryer for 10 minutes or so to fluff them out a bit.
milovany
Yet still, I feel like I am using a loofah AFTER my shower. This is why I like line-dried towels!! :001_smile: I give myself a good rubdown after my shower.
Marylou
Place them in the dryer for 10-15 before hanging them. Of course, if you don't have a dryer this advice is not welcome!
naturemom
I dry my towels for 10-15 minutes in the dryer before hanging outside. I find this leaves them much softer than using the dryer after hanging. Edited July 27, 2010 by naturemom
Debbie in OR
I finally started using fabric softener and then we also throw them in the dryer for a few minutes. Much, much better now.
flobee76
You can use white vinegar in the rinse cycle to soften up your clothing/ towels. However, I do find that towels are always rough after line drying. You can always throw them in the dryer for 10 min. to soften up. :001_smile: OOPS! I just read your OP! Sorry! mum
Rough towels are how they are off the line. Just get used to it. I don't know why people fiddle with the fluffing, and the time and expense involved???????? Just enjoy the satisfaction of dollars saved, and being good to the environment. And just think, your kids will have grown up with rough towels and they will think that's how they are, and the generations to come will never have to wonder how to fluff them up. Enjoy! BMW
I do something similar to the "put them in the dryer for 10-15 min" routine. I cringe at the thought of line drying and then using energy to put them in the machine, so I wash the towels first and hang them up, then I do another load in the wash right away. Half of the next load goes into the dryer wet, with the towels from the line, the other half goes out on the line. The dry towels from the line (it's warm here and they are usually dry) actually reduce the dryer time and the wet clothes soften up the towels a lot. MotherGoose
My parents still don't have a dryer, but I do. It took me a long time to get used to clothes and things feeling soft after I began using a dryer in college, because if something got soft, it meant it was dirty from multiple wears, when I was growing up. I still would like to have stiff clothes, but I like my dryer better :) The good thing about it is, if you dry things on the line, your kids will not know anything different (yours might be old enough to complain) and will learn that crunchy=clean! :)

And I wouldn't have to put them all in the machine - just the big ones.
