I have a second grader who will be using shurley 2 in the fall. we're finishing off FLL2 and starting WWE 2. i'd like to hear how others have rounded out Shurley .... which (if any) of these components do you add, and what curr/approach? -handwriting -spelling -latin -writing -copywork -poetry memorization -phonics review :bigear:
Guest Cheryl in SoCal
I ONLY use the grammar portion of Shurley (3rd through 7th grade levels). Here is what I add: Phonics Review/Spelling - All About Spelling (start in 2nd, or when done with phonics) Writing - IEW (around 4th grade) Penmanship - WriteStart and then Pentime (sterting in K) Latin - Latina Christiana (around 4th grade) Poetry - IEW (can't remember the name right now)

This is what I added in: Handwriting: copywork using StartWrite program Spelling: Spalding and then MegaWords Latin: Prima Latina and then Latina Christiana Writing: WWE, IEW, and WT Poetry memorization: selections from Harp & Laurel Wreath and Living Memory I did use the writing portions of Shurley. I found that they provided the structure my child needed while IEW provided the input in style. I found it to be a good combination and was not turned off by the writing portion of Shurley as many others are. I did sometimes change the topics a bit but otherwise we stuck to them as written. They are very formulaic, but I felt at the younger ages that that was a good thing, and they gave a good jumping off point to grow from. Mom0012
I am going to be using Shurley 4 with my 5th grader and probably my 3rd grader as well this year. We will only use the grammar portion. Other LA subjects will be: Writing: IEW for my son AND WWE for my daughter Spelling: SRA Spelling for my son AND SWR for my daughter Poetry: IEW's Poetry Memorization program for both Handwriting: A Reason for Handwriting for my daughter, SRA program for son Reading: SL Readers Language Mechanics: Editor in Chief Lisa

You can get it from The Critical Thinking Company and it comes as either a workbook or a software program. I'm using the workbook. There is also another mechanics book called Daily Paragraph Editing put out by Evan Moore. Veritas Press uses this with Shurley but my son really struggled with it. I'm hoping he'll have more success with Editor in Chief. Lisa
