Ok, her mom just received her FCAT scores from her last year of PS. She began HS the first of April because they had moved closer. So she will be with us again this year. Ok her test results show her in the beginning of 4th grade. She should be entering 6th grade this year but there is no way. Her mom purchased BJU 5th, against my judgement, and it is way over her head. I have looked at MM, MUS, and about a million others and can't decide. We need to find something and stick with it. Here are the problems; she doesn't know any of her facts, she has no retention, and honestly I would have said she was on more of a mid 3rd grade level with her understanding. Her mom does not want me to use something way out of a traditional S&S because she may decide to place her back in PS. And yes (as I have stated before) I am pretty certain she has a LD but her mom will not agree to have her tested. So what math would the hive recommend? Something that covers one topic at a time with built in review and takes baby steps??????

I would have to suggest R&S math. The 3rd grade book is all about multiplication and division facts. You could totally go through the book a little faster and finish in less than a year. You could supplement with MM Blue for geometry or whatever area she is behind in. I have children with LD and I couldn't imagine trying to do math without them knowing their facts. Even my dd (age 10) who was labeled as mildly retarded (by the ps) has her facts down using R&S. If she doesn't know her addition/subtraction facts you could do 2nd.

Since her mom bought BJU5 and wants something traditions, I'd suggest trying Saxon 5/4. It is very traditional so it will satisfy her mom. Make sure you start at the beginning and do all of those facts review sheets (in the homeschool package). They start with addtion and subtraction facts.

Then look at what other types of math you are comfortable teaching. What have you successfully used in the past? You can add some math games from RS to help her with conceptual understanding and give her a better way to practice. I'd not try to get everything from one place. I'd stay with something comfortable to her mom and add to it.

found samples and placement test and I can tell you she wouldn't be able to answer any of the questions on the 5/4 test. What does this mean?

I could be wrong, but I thought 5/4 would be regular 5th grade and advanced 4th grade. Or is it a traditional 4th grade or 5th grader that needs more help. Anyway, I found a description online: Math 5/4 is an introduction to basic, mid-level math concepts such as whole numbers, computation algorithms, geometry, patterns, and sequences.

You could look at the placement tests for the lower levels. I googled and found the easiest link through Sonlight: Saxon Placement. Use the one for Primary, grades K-3.

I started homeschooling when my dd was done with 4th grade PS. She was an honor roll student the WHOLE time. I got her 5th grade BJU and she just could not do it. So I got her 4th grade BJU. Still no go. We had to go way back to 3rd grade BJU. Now, I followed the 3rd grade grade order of the books, but I did all 3 at once (kinda) Example-- when we did fractiosn, we did fractions in the 3rd grade book. Then we would go to the 4th grade book. Then the 5th grade book. Then we would go on to the next thing- say it was multiplication. We would do it in the 3rd grade book, then go on to 4th grade multiplication, then 5th grade multiplication. That took us 14 months, but she was caught up and fully understood the concepts. In 6th grade she did BJU 6th grade math easily! Now she started Chalkdust pre-algebra a month ago and will be in 7th grade. BJU is the perfect curriculum if you do something similar because it is spiral. NOW, BJU is outlandishly expensive if you buy new. Look used and you should find GREAT deals! (I remember I got BJU 4th grade for $12 for the hard cover textbook!)

I personally would recommend you going that route! I have BTDT and it proved amazing results for my dd! :grouphug:

Did you look at the Saxon table of contents? It really does start back with addition and subtraction then moves through skip counting and all the way up to division. My dd is completing it this month. A lot of homeschoolers use it a year ahead - my dd used it in 3rd. It is designed for 5th or 4th grade. If she scored at 4th grade on the FCAT, then she should be able to start in 5/4. They have daily drills of math facts (starting with easy addtion) and slowly progress through the material.
