LAmom
Anyone have a good biography recommendation? Please! :) Sacajawea, too, if you know of one. Edited July 23, 2010 by LAmom Wiki spelled Sacagewea with a g! I thought it looked weird...
Ali in OR
For Sacajawea we liked The Truth About Sacajawea by Kenneth Thomasma. He's the same guy who wrote Om-Kas-Toe and Naya Nuki. From the introductory page: "The Truth about Sacajawea is an accurate paraphrase of the journal accounts that mention Sacajawea or "the Sqar," as she is often called. This entry-by-entry approach allows readers to experience what the explorers wrote about Sacajawea. Between the journal accounts is a short commentary and brief synopsis of events that took place between entries."
Guest Alte Veste Academy
Neuberger's old Landmark book, The Lewis and Clark Expedition, is exceptionally good. It is a great read-aloud for the early grades and good for independent reading for upper grammar and above. I have not found a perfect children's book bio for Sacagawea but we did like Sacagawea Speaks.
MelissaMinNC
We read Of Courage Undaunted last year (3rd grade). It was specifically about the expedition, but had some biographical information about several members of the Corps of Engineers, including Lewis, Clark and Sacagawea. My dd could not have read it independently, but it was a great read aloud. :) Melissa
Lostinabook
Ambleside schedules Of Courage Undaunted for 5th grade so dd will be reading that this fall. She did enjoy some of the Seaman books when she was younger though.
prairiegirl
We read "Captain Dog" by Roland Smith this year. It tells of the expedition from the viewpoint of Seaman. We loved this book.
Alphabetika
This isn't a bio, but we really like "Bold Journey" as a fictional account of the Lewis and Clark journey from one corp member's p.o.v.
