HSM-Crissy
Here's what I am thinking, but I want to see what you other amazing women are doing or have done with 1st Grade.  I am thinking... R&S for the basic (reading, arithmetic, penmanship, music, art) SL for Science & History/Geography  I think I will have to supplement w/ MUS or Horizons 1  However, I'm considering... lotsofpumpkins
We really like R&S 1st grade phonics/reading/music. For math, we prefer CLE. We used to use R&S math but felt it needed supplementing. With CLE, I'm totally happy using just ONE math program! Â As for science/social studies, I'll let others chime in, since I haven't used the choices you mentioned. Just Robyn
My rising 1st grader will be doing:  Moving Beyond the Page (just one concept. We'll be starting chemistry later in the year, so he'll do this first.) Literature Pockets AAS FLL - and maybe some sort of Ruth Heller books mixed with waldorfy MLB activities that I would make up WWE Writing Skills (by Harcourt) Language Arts workbook by Harcourt Daily Handwriting Practice (Evan Moor)  McRuffy Color Math supplemented with MM  Noeo Chemistry with some supplements  History Odyssey  Linguistic Development through Poetry Memorization (I think. I'll be ordering it soon, so I'll have to look at it before I'm sure.)  community art classes form drawing (recently ordered, so again, I may decide against this)  hopefully piano lessons by me, but we'll see how that goes Music Ace Deluxe  I just ordered Trail Guide to World Geography, so maybe that as well. I ordered it mainly for my older ds, but maybe after I look at it I'll decide to have them do it together.
mom31257
I looked at R&S, but ended up choosing CLE. It's been great! You might want to look at it. It's consumable and includes grammar, phonics, spelling, and penmanship. It even introduces creative writing near the end of 1st grade. I don't have experience with 1st grade math because when we started my ds tested at beginning of 2nd. I haven't seen any need to supplement. Â He has become very independent with the review part of each lesson. I spend a short time doing the new part of the lesson, then he does all the rest by himself. Spelling Power SOTW Galloping the Globe for geography, literature, and cultural studies Elemental Science Biology http://elementalscience.com/ Prima Latina (as soon as we finish Song School Latin) A Reason for Handwriting Artistic Pursuits  Galloping the Globe looks like it will be the most enjoyable one for us. I'm not using it for history simply because it's not chronological. I like that it's a unit study, so you can do as much with it as you want. Food4Thought
I'm doing something similar to Julie - keeping the curriculum fairly limited. The boy asks a bazillion questions, and we're reading a Physics book right now (just for fun - his choice), so I'm content to continue down a more eclectic road for a while. Worksheet learning doesn't work for DS - lots of reading, discussion, and experimenting does. Of course, this will all change in 2 years when DD is ready for 1st grade - I can already tell she will be very different from her brother.  History/Geography: Usborne History of the Ancient World (spine) + read-alouds (similar to WTM recommendations)  Science: Animal Kingdom, Human Body, Plant Kingdom (all library read-alouds, planned on the 20/10/6 schedule like WTM recommends)  Math: Math Mammoth  Reading: The Reading Lesson + phonics rules  Writing/Language Arts: Evan-Moor Daily Language Review + copywork (like WWE)

Dmmetler
Here's mine, for a kiddo who can read pretty much anything and likes reading, coloring, drawing, and artsy-craftsy type stuff.  History/LA/Bible/Literature- Sonlight Core 1 with Adv 2 readers Memory Bible, Growing With Christ Primary, Scholastic mini-books from the local teacher's store for Grammar, Punctuation, and Vocabulary, Brian P. Cleary books and Grammar Songs Dover Activity books  Spelling-Scott Foresman Spelling/Phonics grade 3, Scholastic spelling supplement book we got at the local teacher's store.  HWOT cursive/Copywork  Math-Singapore Math-finish 1B, start 2A, IP 1A/1B, Saxon primary manipulatives kit, C-rods.  Science-Trade books, AIMS project books, and hands-on activities/journaling, mostly following WTM Life science recommendations.  Foreign language- Latin-Finish SSL, begin LfC A (probably very slowly), Spanish- Elementary Spanish 1/2 on United streaming with other activities from The complete book of Spanish gr 1-3, watch videos in Spanish. I'd love to find a Spanish-language playgroup for her.  DD also wants to do SSG, so I ordered the workbook/CD for her, but I don't plan to put it on the schedule as a class-I'll put the CD on her Mp3 player, leave the workbook out, and see what she does with it.   Fine Arts- Music For little Mozarts books 3/4 (taught by mommy) Kindermusik YC 3-4 class if there are enough students for it. I think her teacher needs 6 to have the class, and there were only 7 last year, so if even 2 kids don't come back, we won't have a class.  Ballet  Homeschool art class, plus crafts/drawing/free art at home, Dover fine arts books, and visiting local museums/galleries (my goal is to do one art field trip a month)  PE-  Tumbling class at the rec center  DD says she wants to play soccer, but I'm not sure we really have the time since dance and music are both in the evenings. Snowfall
We're going to be doing:  Language Arts: Phonics Road 1 Phonics Pathways (we've already been working in this for a year) Peterson Directed Handwriting (PR has handwriting, but it's not a good fit) Grammar will be covered lightly with cute books like Eight Ate Math: Rightstart B MEP1  Science: BFSU I have RS4K Chemistry and R.E.A.L. Science Odyssey Life. We'll probably do some RS4K and save the RSO for next year.  History: SOTW1 with AG  Geography: Evan Moor workbook on map skills, landforms, etc. Mom-made country studies based on the book Children Just Like Me (Did I see someone else say they were doing the same thing? Cool!)  Art/Music: Simply Music Piano Lessons Artistic Pursuits  We have the MBTP 6-8 Culture concept I really want to use as a social studies thing at some point, but that will probably be at the end of our school year when we're finished with everything else. It will be something fun to do while I get everything in order for the following school year, since we are continuing year round (mostly so we can take off whenever we feel like it and still know we're getting enough days in :tongue_smilie:). misidawnrn
I have changed things around a bit over the last month, here is what I have planned right now for 1st grade. Â LA We are doing OPGTR and I think I am going to keep going but we do about 2-3 lessons a day. We also have all the phonics cards from Abeka and we review with them too so I may drop OPGTR. I just got Growing with Grammer in the mail today and I love that it is hands on for DD, not just listening to me read what a noun is and discussing it. I think DD does better with hands on vs. reading/discussing and FLL was just way too dry for me. I was doing WWE 1 but I may drop that and just do narration from the books we read and copywork from the GWG. It seems to have a lot of sentence copying in it. I have SWO 1 and will start that when I decide we are ready and far enough along in phonics. DD reads every day and I read to her most days. Â Math I switched a few weeks back to math mammoth from Saxon math 1 and so far I love it better. I like that it is working on one concept at a time. Â Science I have elemental science biology and so far love the look of it. We haven't started it yet but will start in the fall. I have all of the supplemental books to go with it but we are doing a light school load in the summer. Â Bible BJU Bible 1 (haven't switched this one) Â History SOTW 1 I am really starting to like this. I have been taking it slow and we read alot of extra books and watching documentaries on Netflix. We also do a timeline in a sketch book. Â Music Usborn piano I haven't started this but we will in the fall. Â I was doing some social studies stuff with Scott Foresman social studies but we haven't done it for a while. I also have a health book but will incorporate it when we do the human body stuff. misidawnrn
Can you tell us (or at least me) more about Growing with Grammar? What do you mean that it's hands on? Also, what is FLL (I'm thinking LL means Language Lessons, but I'm not sure...and don't know what the L is........First??)? :tongue_smilie: I can't speak for everyone but only for myself but I found FLL to be very dry and boring (sorry SWB). It was reading and discussing and we started HSing in April and we are still on nouns....blah. It was easy lessons like proper nouns...(mom) your mom's sister is your aunt...what is your aunt's name?...(child) My aunt's name is Aunt Jacque. (mom) your dad's sister is your aunt...what is your aunt's name?...(child) My aunt's name is Aunt Mary. My DD likes to do workbooky things, which I don't think is quite along the lines of classical education but it is how she learns so that is what we are going to do. Â We have only done 4 pages in GWG but it is much more hands on and workbooky and seems to move through the lessons a little faster than FLL. Today we worked on complete sentences tell a thought on someone or something. The child got an example of some complete sentences and then got to make up the ending to a sentence like "The hungry cow........" I don't care that she mispelled words as we don't work on spelling yet but she does have to use her best handwriting. The next page matched up the front of a sentence and the ending of it like "The pilot........flew the plane." "The chef......baked a cake." The next page talked about all sentences start with a capital letter and had sentences to rewrite with a capital letter. Â The only thing I have found that I wish was different so far (on our first day) is that I wish that it had 1st grade lines to rewrite the sentences on. DD isn't quite able to write well without them yet...infact I emailed them to tell them that. Â So far I like that it starts with sentences and what they are. Learning what nouns are is great but I think knowing that nouns will fit in a sentence is a good idea first. Â Sorry to hijack the thread and I am sure more people like FLL than not like it. I just gave my experience. Edited July 21, 2010 by misidawnrn

BatmansWife
Misidawnrn, thanks for explaining more about GwG. This has been a great thread. I love seeing what others are doing with kids that are the same age as mine. It's all so different, and I get new ideas. The Evan Moore Geography book does look good (I added that to my list). And, how about the cursive the K child is finishing up? What would that be?? Interesting. :bigear:
HSM-Crissy
We've got our 1st grade plans pretty well set- now I just need to finish organizing it all.  LANGUAGE ARTS Reading: We just finished Ordinary Parent's Guide, so now we'll just read out loud from McGuffey's to check fluency periodically Grammar: Rod and Staff Preparing to Build 2 Writing: R&S as above plus other writing for other subjects Spelling: R&S 2 Handwriting: we finished Cursive First last year, now I just spot correct      Quick question...Did you do R&S 1 for K? I am getting ready to start K and wanted to get feelers out for 1st grade. Thanks!
Whereneverever
Quick question...Did you do R&S 1 for K? I am getting ready to start K and wanted to get feelers out for 1st grade. Thanks! Â I did R&S Preschool ABC books, but I didn't do the Grade 1. I decided to do something else for that level because they combine Language Arts and Bible for that level, and that level only, and I'm not quite on the same page with the Anabaptists on doctrine. If that's not an issue for you then it's a great program. We're really enjoying Preparing to Build.
