Linzy
I am looking for book suggestions, preferably series for an almost four year old reading simple chapter books. He has read the "Frog and Toad" series, " Henry and Mudge" level 2 series, "Oliver and Amanda" pig series (the best fort ever, etc...), Curious George and others. He loves reading and will read a lot! I am just looking for books that are interesting for him with real stories, preferably still with some pictures, challenging to him on a reading level but still on a maturity level he can relate to. Do you get where I am going? On a side note he likes battles, robots, dogs, dinosaurs, pretty much your standard boy fare. Thanks in advance!! JenneinCA
Commander Toad was a big hit here. There are a few in the series. I put a link to one at amazon so you can take a look. http://www.amazon.com/Commander-Toad-Space-Jane-Yolen/dp/0698113551/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1274239125&sr=8-1 Commander Toad in Space
Linzy
Thanks he'll love this. He loves space (big fan of Dr. Who and Star Wars) and he needs the series so I can just keep feeding him the next book without a major search for something appropriate. KC in KS
My daughter fell in love with Magic Tree House at that age. I had to do quite a bit of explaining and supplementing, because she just didn't know what a lot of the stuff they talked about was (I don't think she understands Night of the Ninjas to this day). She did much better with the ones that came closer to fantasy.
Tracy
I recommend the Read-Aloud Handbook and Some of My Best Friends Are Books: Guiding Gifted Readers from Pre-School to High School for book lists. I keep these types of books near my computer so I can request books online at the library.
Lisa in the UP of MI
Have you tried giving her nonfiction books on topics on topics that she enjoys? This is the easiest way for me to challenge my 5.5yo.
Dmmetler
My DD loved the Bones and Young Cam Jansen mysteries by David A. Adler at about age 3. Mercy Wilson was also a hit at that "just moving into chapter books" stage.

nmoira
Look into some of the shorter Dick King-Smith books, like Funny Frank.
kmacnchs
my almost 4 yo has just gotten into reading The Littles (and ALL of their books). She reads them out loud to me since they are challenging but there are pics every other page and the print is not too small so it is not too challenging. Truscifi
We are about to start the Hank the Cowdog series. It looks very promising.
2smartones
At that age, mine liked the My Father's Dragon series, anything by Jeanette Oke, the Mercy Watson series, some of the level 4 readers (like the level 1's you find at walmart, but these had to be found online or at local toy stores), and from the library, things like thick books full of classic short stories (Little Red Hen, Three Little Pigs, etc.). Non-fiction was also a big hit. Just walk up and down the junior aisles at the library and see what he grabs. You can read it together at a lower level if necessary, but it's nice to spark interest in topics he wouldn't normally choose simply because he doesn't have the life experience to know what's out there. Linzy
Thanks so much you guys, I'm going to get a bunch of these from amazon and see what strikes his fancy. Unfortunately our library has a horrible selection.
MissKNG
What about "Arthur" books as in the PBS Arthur. They have picture and chapter books.
