momee
I cannot u/stand how to use the maps. As of now, I think the children are to find the assigned place on their own map (a mark it one if they bought one from SL) and the answers are by numbers on the teacher's maps. Are there not student copies of the maps? Thanks in advance. Also, do you ask the study guide questions daily or have your children write the answers and discuss? I'm unsure as to the best way for us to go over the material. I do not! want to badger him right now with questions, but want him to have a little leeway in discussing what he finds interesting. KWIM? Just looking for experiences. Thanks. ps I'm thinking of looking at WEM again and taking some cues from that...
Tokyomarie
Use the curriculum the way it fits you best! Maps: Yes, SL's basic suggestion is the Mark-It Map. I used other commercially available blank maps that could be printed. I have Uncle Josh's Outline Map CD & I've found other blank maps on the web. Questions: They are meant to stimulate discussion. They are there to make sure you cover the bases when you do discuss. I've done different things with them but never required my kids to answer all questions in writing. I have usually chosen a few questions that require more thought- say a few sentences to a longer paragraph or so- to have my students complete in writing each week. My older daughter is a very verbal person who would start discussions with me. I rarely had a formal discussion time with her because I realized we were already covering the bases. For my less verbal children, I've asked them to give an oral narration of what they've read with the questions in front of me. If they've missed any major points, I'll use the questions to guide me in drawing them out.
