Donna T.
I'm looking for a good version of The Pilgrim's Progress to read aloud to 2nd and 5th graders. They are both mature listeners as far as vocabulary and what they can comprehend and understand but my oldest is a little on the immature side as far as being sensitive to things like giants and other fantastical creatures. I would love a version with pictures but I'm afraid any very intense pictures would turn him off. Any favorites?
PeterPan
I would look at Helen Taylor's Little Pilgrim's Progress. It's absolutely WONDERFUL. They could draw their own pictures as they listen. I read it to dd ages ago and keep wanting to do it again. :)

This year we got "Dangerous Journey" with the MFW:Rome to the Reformation package, and we haven't enjoyed it nearly as much. (In fact, my kids are frightened by some of the illustrations.) Chloe
My two oldest dc read Little Pilgrim's progress on their own at ages 10 and 9. They LOVED it!

Donna T.
Oh, great! That's the one I had chosen but I just wasn't sure. Having them draw pictures is a great idea. I heard of someone doing that with one very long piece of butcher paper that they hung in their hallway. I had forgotten about that idea. Thanks so much! PeterPan
Ditto the others. I don't like Dangerous Journey nearly as well. (my two copies notwithstanding!) And when you read it, be sure to sing the hymn Bunyan wrote to go with it. http://www.cyberhymnal.org/htm/h/w/hwhowvbe.htm

sarahv
Well, we LOVE Dangerous Journey, and I think the illustations are fabulous. You might want to take a look at it in the bookstore sometime. :001_smile:
Donna T.
I've reserved both at my local library. So glad they have them! I'm considering tackling it in the original language. I have an unabridged copy and I also have it on MP3. Just not sure if I want to take forever with that project!
Punks in Ontario
We've been reading the version from Answers in Genesis. My second grader and kindergardener have enjoyed it along with the olders. There's about one pencil drawing for each section, which they always need to see. It has the full length text. We have read The Dangerous Journey and quite liked it, too. However, I prefer to keep to the original text if possible. The question sections are great for when they get older. The grade 5 child may be able to use some of them. My vote would be for the Answer in Genesis version - both if you have the budget.
PeterPan
You might just put the unabridged audio on while they play. My dd never took to it, but my nephew LOVES it, go figure. I'm saving mine, hoping my ds will take to it. So you could read them one version and listen to the audio of the other. :)

Krista in Colorado
I would look at Helen Taylor's Little Pilgrim's Progress. It's absolutely WONDERFUL. mom2jjka
Another version my kids liked was the Abeka one. (I think it is one of their 4th or 5th grade readers?)
Abbysfriend
And AIG has a DVD of Pilgrims Progress which I just turn on for the audio and let them listen and follow along sometimes too :-) The audio is a little more animated and interesting than Mom's voice sometimes hehe.
