Hunter's Moon
I took lab for Biology this year and while we did labs we also had tests and projects. When my mother and I make my lab course for Chemistry, should we include tests and projects or just do labs?
Michelle in AL
We just do formal lab reports. We usually have a workbook that accompanies the labs that has questions re: the labs. I'm so proud to see all the initiative you're taking in setting up your education! With that kind of drive, you'll surely make your way in life. Hunter's Moon
Thank you so much! This board has helped me so much! When I first joined, I was so unsure about taking control of my own education, now, I cannot wait!
Michelle in AL
Do you have a lab book to go with your course? If not, some might have suggestions on what to use.
Hunter's Moon
No. I think I will just go by the Chemistry book that I use and decide what experiments would go best with that weeks lessons. I am not sure what the name of the book is yet though. Also, should I do it year round or just half year?
Kareni
Unless you are on a block schedule, Chemistry is typically done as a year long course. The standard is one credit for a Chemistry course. When my daughter did Chemistry at home, we used the MicroChem Kit for the lab portion. Regards, Kareni
Hunter's Moon
Well I plan on doing Chem year round but Chem lab year round also?
Kareni
Yes, the lab would typically also be year round but intermittently. For example, my daughter did 17 labs and we spaced them out to best match where she was in the text book. Regards, Kareni
Hunter's Moon
I was thinking I would do at least one every two weeks or so? Would this count as a 1/2 credit then?
Kareni
Since a one credit class usually entails about 150 hours (I've heard anywhere from 120 to 180 hours), I'd be leery of giving too much additional credit for a lab unless it was a VERY comprehensive lab experience. You mentioned (in another thread, I believe) that you received additional lab credit for your Biology class. How much effort did you expend for that? Could you devise a similar plan for your Chemistry lab based on that? Regards, Kareni
