Bostonian
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/18/education/edlife/18quiz-t.html I thought the questions were reasonable for late elementary school. What books or sites would people recommend for similar quizzes?
Bostonian
Ugh, should be "smarter" in the title.
Pamela H in Texas
The students on the show study for every question. If they studied and remembered, they know the answers. I do not believe the average 5th grader could answer most of those questions correctly. ETA: I have watched the show and I can answer most of the questions. Though I doubt it, my hope would be that most adults would be able to. From what I'm seeing in the "really good" school district I work in, that will not be the case when these high schoolers are adults. Gratia271
I have heard of this before.
thescrappyhomeschooler
I'm pretty sure none of the 5th graders around here could answer those questions without some serious prep time. They certainly don't learn that stuff at the public school.
Jean in Newcastle
The Hirsch books "What your x grader needs to know" are a good series. I think there are perhaps questions at the end of each section but I'm not sure.

They do offer Teacher Handbooks that have worksheets, questions, etc. but they are fairly expensive.

Good to know. Can you tell that it has been a while since I've looked at these?:)
LibraryLover
Ugh, should be "smarter" in the title. Not if you're from Boston.
tristangrace
To answer the title question: If fifth-graders can answer all the questions correctly, then, no, I am not smarter than a fifth-grader! :glare: (Well, I am not more knowledgeable than a fifth-grader. Perhaps I am smarter than some. But that's a different matter entirely.) And I don't have an answer to the question in the body of your post, either! Laura Corin
The answers may be in the 5th graders' books, but do they actually remember all the details? Laura
Jean in Newcastle
The answers may be in the 5th graders' books, but do they actually remember all the details? Laura Well that's the thing about those quizzes - I'm aware of everything they ask (as in I remember studying it sometime) but often it's just on the tip of my brain and I can't quite remember it!
