Alyce
I'd like a world history spine, something that incorporates western and eastern history. My plan is to go off with real books as I find areas I want to learn more about. I don't want it to be too dry. My children used Notgrass but I found it too superficial. Any other recommendations. What about the new SWB books? I think both are out now.. what did you find superficial about notgrass?
Alyce
I want something more indepth. Notgrass was fine for a light overview but I'm looking for something more substantial.
Janice in NJ
Susan's History of the Ancient and Medieval Worlds: http://www.amazon.com/History-Ancient-World-Earliest-Accounts/dp/039305974X/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1271325945&sr=8-3 http://www.amazon.com/History-Medieval-World-Conversion-Constantine/dp/0393059758/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1271325927&sr=8-1 I think these four are currently my top pics for continuing. Not all one narrative, but they are well done. Murphey's History of Asia to cover the non-Western. From Dawn to Decadence - Overlaps with Susan's Med. Title, but I'm enjoying it! http://www.amazon.com/Dawn-Decadence-Western-Cultural-Present/dp/0060928832/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1271326044&sr=1-1 Tindall's America: A Narrative History http://www.amazon.com/America-Narrative-History-Seventh-One/dp/0393928209/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1271325977&sr=1-5 Johnson's Modern Times: http://www.amazon.com/Modern-Times-Revised-Twenties-Perennial/dp/0060935502/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1271326087&sr=1-1 Those have bubbled to the top of my lists as favorites - my personal "ah-ha! pile. :001_smile: Peace, Janice Enjoy your little people Enjoy your journey
Yolanda in Mass
My children used Notgrass but I found it too superficial. Any other recommendations. FYI - Notgrass is meant as a survey course, not an in-depth course. Lots of people use it as a spine because it leaves time to study specific areas more in-depth. Some of these other books are so in-depth (and boring) that there is no time, or interest, left for those wonderful rabbit trails. KWIM? Those history students who are not particularly interested in more are not burdened with way too much detail, but instead just enough information. Just wanted to clarify.
