deeinfl
It's not very WTMish. :) Next year we start SOTW and will begin our history rotation.  English-School of Tomorrow Literature and Creative Writing-level 2. This has been perfect for him and it gets him to write every day without seeming like it's a whole intimidating paper. Abeka English grammar book-this has been just okay. Reading several chapter books on his own quiet time--giving me oral narrations, and reading aloud to me a few times a week so I can check his progress. (we have several readers from Pathway, but will probably save those for the summer or the end of the year reading since we are almost finished with a lot of our curriculum and are not officially done until the end of June)  Spelling-For Spelling we have used Spelling Plus dictation and love it!!! We plan to use this through the 6th grade and then dive into spelling power from then on. If he has difficulty spelling then I have 3 levels of Sequential Spelling.  History-Abeka 3. Will be starting SOTW 1 next year in the 4rth grade because my son has requested it.  Science-School of Tomorrow 3rd grade science paces! Love these! They are like mini unit studies each one--my son's favorite subject!  Health-completed Abeka 3 health  Math-CLE math 2nd grade level. I had to start from the beginning with my son because of the way that CLE teaches different concepts, but we have loved and are loving this math and are on to the next level very soon!  Bible-we are using paces, but plan to go back to family bible study using the bible study guide worksheets. We used that last year...miss it so much! (we still like the paces, just don't know if I will continue with them next year)  Art-Several Mark Kistler drawing books and other drawing books, lots of drawing journals and supplies. My son actually shows promising talent in this area so I'm trying to always have materials readily available.  PE-plays outside every day!  This is pretty much it for now! :)  HTH someone,  Dee

MamaMamaMama!!
I looked and didn't see 3rd grade plans yet. I will be bringing all of my kids home again next year and am looking for ideas and what subjects actually need to be taught (do they need phonics still?). I think phonics depends on how well your kiddo reads. IMO if they read on level then I would let Spelling be the phonics lesson. Pick a good rules based spelling course (phonics essentially) and go for it. My DD is in 3rd right now and this is what we used this year... Â Math: Math U See Gamma (hits multiplication) Reading: Sonlight Readers 2 Reg. and she just started advanced. LA: We Used Primary Language Lessons. I wont use it again I think. First Language Lessons is what we are switching to. Spelling: We used Spelling Power. Its okay but we are switching to Sequential Spelling OR Spelling Work Out in the fall. If your worried about phonics you could pick Explode the Code 5,6,7 for the year and use the list words for spelling words as well. Handwriting: Of course we do copywork and notebooking but we also use A REason for Handwriting T. Everything Else: My Fathers World Adventures.. covers notebooking history and bible copywork, State Geography and some history, Science in a broad overview, Art, and Music. Â It was a really good year. Wish I'd started a writing program though. Also wish I'd made a better spellling and language choice.

Penelope
I am still figuring this out so I love to read what everyone else is doing! Thanks to all that posted.  LA: MCT Island, which I think ds will love. Probably also WWE3 or WT1 for writing, but maybe trimming some weeks off depending on how much pf the MCT writing we do.  Copywork of poems and verses used for memory  AAS4 is planned, but I'm going to see how he does with either Megawords or SWO as a supplement, and then we may switch. I need to find ways to increase his independence where I can to free up some time for the younger ones,  Math: Singapore 3A/3B plus challenging word problems. Hands On Equations as a supplement if we can get to it.  Music: instrument lessons which include theory. For music appreciation, we play and talk about music all the time. I have started to introduce a but of composer study, and will do that more as we study history, since we are starting SOTW3.  History: SOTW3. A lot of supplementing for American History, using books from SL core 3 and others. It might take us a long time to get through SOTW3!  Science: I'll probably purchase elemental science chemistry or physics to use as a loose guideline. We tend to follow interests for science. Right now working through Janice Van Cleave's "Engineering for every kid", which will probably take us into the fall.  Art: Artistic Pursuits. But am hoping an art teacher will fall from the sky into my living room once a week or so. so that it actually gets done. :001_huh:  Language: Rosetta Stone Spanish. Want to do LfC A, but may not add that in until late fall.  Phew! Third grade is scaring me a little. I feel like I have to up the expectations a bit. Laura Corin
Latin: ??? (We'll finish up GSWL. Older bro will probably go to Latin Prep, but I'm thinking 3rd grade may be too young for this.... we'll see). Â Â Age 9 is about the earliest I recommend. Even then, I'm going slowly with my bright 9yo - we'll only get the first half of Latin Prep 1 and the first workbook done this year (his 9-10yo year). If you start at eight, then you will be getting into difficult stuff at 9, which might leave you both very frustrated. Â Laura

I knew you had an "earliest age" recommendation, but hadn't gotten around to searching the boards for it. My to-be 3rd grader will be 9 in December, but I agree with everything you said above. I had hopes of keeping the two together, but Latin Prep looks most appealing to me.... Hmmmm.... I either need to find something else to use for a year or else teach them separately. Or.... just review GSWL the first part of the year, start Latin Prep after Christmas with both and go very slowly....  Thanks again for posting.... it's best to find these things out ahead of time! :001_smile:
Laura Corin
Â Thanks again for posting.... it's best to find these things out ahead of time! :001_smile: Â I've heard good things about Lively Latin for younger children, but I haven't seen it. We concentrate on living languages in the earlier years, then come to Latin a bit later. Â Laura
