Oh my, I think my brain cells are dying - I get 5/6

so he sold 2/3 of 1/2, right?

2/3 x 1/2 = 1/3

1/3 + 1/2 = 2/6 + 3/6 = 5/6

I get 5/6 too.

Me, too.

2/3 of 1/2 is 2/6

2/6 plus 1/2 is 2/6 plus 3/6 equals 5/6

I don't see any reason why sevenths or tenths fit here. ?

I get 5/6 also.

Me too.

Yep - it's 5/6, whether I do it with a bar diagram or multiplying and adding.

The answer key is brain damaged. :D

Thank you SO MUCH, everyone! I have a friend whose son just could not get the "right answer" because he kept getting 5/6, also. I not only drew a picture...but, did the math...and, kept getting 5/6.

I think the answer key is incorrect.

Thanks!!!

I bet it was a typo. Sam was probably supposed to sell Mary 2/5 of his stock. Then she would have 2/5 of 1/2 plus her original 1/2 for 1/5 + 1/2 = 2/10 + 5/10 = 7/10.

Thanks for taking the time to figure that out.

I get 5/6 as well. My bet is on a typo on their part.
