Handmaiden
If you knew then what you know now, what would you do differently? What words of wisdom can you impart to homeschoolers in 7th/8th grades who face high school right around the corner? TIA for sharing your insights! JennW in SoCal
This topic seems to come up a couple of times each month. Get comfy, grab a cup of coffee or tea, and take some time reading this thread which includes in my post a link to another thread on the same topic. if you could do it all over again And welcome to the board! It isn't too early to start hanging out and seeing what goes on here.
jld
I have a reply in the thread that JennW linked, but I'll reply again. Basically, I wish I had never worried. Things have worked out fine. Just follow your child's lead and enjoy life with her/him! It will be okay -- really!:)
Pam L in Mid Tenn
Life circumatances might change your educational plans dramatically. Discuss alot (even mundane things like tv shows and that song on the radio). Discussing and questioning teaches thinking skills. Don't stress over writing, but do teach writing. Teach good sentences and good paragraphs. Teach some research skills. If a child can write a 1 to 2 page fact based report, they can take those same skills to expand to a 10 page reserach paper. I'd concentrate on lots of 1 page reports! Everyone needs to have basic math skills. Don't stress if your child isn't going to complete calculus by the 12th grade. Take math at YOUR child's pace and teach to understanding. READ, READ , READ. Fun books and literature. Literature textbooks have exposed my kids to writers that we normally would not choose to read. Don't be afraid of a lit text just because it is a text. We have read a great variety by reading through textbooks.
Guest Simpmom
Hello I am not only new to homeschooling but to a highschool teen. I need to meet others who are oldie but goodies at this. I definitely have had a hard time getting started, especially with curriculum. But I have what I have now, and will look for others suggestions for the fall. I am currently using Alpha Omega. Lets talk... Have a super day. God Bless Simpmom
