Kareni
I've always enjoyed Rebecca Rupp's column in Home Education Magazine (HEM) and her books -- Home Learning Year by Year: How to Design a Homeschool Curriculum from Preschool Through High School, Getting Started on Home Learning: How and Why to Teach Your Kids at Home (unfortunately out of print), and The Complete Home Learning Source Book: The Essential Resource Guide for Homeschoolers, Parents, and Educators Covering Every Subject from Arithmetic to Zoology (a veritable tome!). The topic of her HEM January/February 2010 column is Film Clubs, and she lists resources for all ages. One in particular caught my eye as it may be of interest to those interested in a non-traditional approach to Biology. It's Biology in the Movies. According to Rupp, "Appropriate for highschool students, this is an outline of an introductory college course with readings, Web resources, questionnaires, and discussion topics. Movies include The Fly, Jurassic Park, Gattacca, The Boys from Brazil, and Bladerunner." The rest of the Film Clubs article is well worth reading as it lists many other resources (e.g., Movies as Literature {curriculum}, Math in the Movies {website}, Finding Inspiration in Literature and Movies {downloadable curriculum}, David Gilmour's memoir of homeschooling his troubled son via watching movies The Film Club, etc.) Regards, Kareni
