kat19
We have him under the bili blanket right now. Does anyone know of any websites that show what the levels of this are? We are trying to figure out how bad he has it. I found one website that only said 15-20 was bad or something like that, so any info you can provide would be great.. Thanks
Mrs Mungo
I don't know a website but I have that information in one of my breastfeeding books If baby's age is 25-48 hours they will consider phototherapy at greater than 12 (it's 15 if baby is 49-72 hours old and 17 if baby is greater than 72 hours old), will do phototherapy for sure at greater than 15 (or 18 and 20 for slighter older babies), exchange transfusion if phototherapy fails at greater than 20 (or 25 for older babies) and do an exchange transfusion and phototherapy at greater than 25 (or 30 for older babies). Does that help? Are you breastfeeding? If so, make sure you are waking baby up to nurse every two hours around the clock until baby is through this patch. Sitting in a sunny window can help too. A home for their hearts
Are you breastfeeding? Level wise I'm really not sure what is considered high, have you asked your doctor? I know if you are breastfeeding it will take longer for the Jaundice to go away. My dd 5months had it and it took about 2 weeks for it to go away. Her levels were never high enough to constitute using photo therapy or a bili blanket. If you are breastfeeding make sure you feed your little one at least every 2 hours. It's helps the bilirubin to pass through their system.
kat19
with soy formula. His level today was 11.5 (so it's not too high~that I know of). I have never had to deal with my others being jaundice so this is all new to me. He stayed an extra day in the hospital and was put under the photo therapy lights at the hospital, but today they let us bring the bili blanket home. Guess we will see what tomorrow brings~we have to go daily to have blood drawn.

Guess we will see what tomorrow brings~we have to go daily to have blood drawn. Our three boys all had a nice little stay in the NICU due to high bilirubin levels. We were able to take them home once their levels went below 12. So 11.5 is high enough to do treatment, but not something to make you worry. :001_smile: Just keep him under the blanket as much as you can, and keep him drinking and pooping. That will make the levels keep going down.
Colleen
My youngest was delivered early and in the ICU for a few days, under the oxygen tent. He also had photo therapy at the hospital and then at home we used the bili blanket for a couple of weeks. His levels were much, much higher than 11.5 ~ up beyond 20 ~ so I imagine your baby will be right as rain before long.:)
Sue G in PA
My midwife says that frequent breastfeeding REALLY helps flush that bilirubin out of their system much more quickly than formula. I'm not starting a breast vs. bottle debate...JUST asking. If not, sunny windows, formula feeding frequently as was said...drinking and pooping! Good luck...praying it is gone soon. ...................
and make sure baby stays on a sunny patch by the floor as much as humanly possible.
Alice
Bilirubin levels are actually now graphed by hour of age. The absolute level doesn't have much meaning unless you are getting into the 20-30 range.
kat19
We went and had his levels checked again today and he was cleared from using the blanket.. Which is good b/c I don't think his foot is big enough to get poked again. I'm glad :D :D

KristineIN
We went through it with all three of our children, as long as it drops, you are fine, that's why they told you you didn't have to use the blanket anymore. I would still put him in the sun if you can just to help with the yellowing. Kristine
frogpond1
blood incompatibility. I have o blood and my children have A, and somehow they mixed and this antibody thing began. My kids were under Billy Lights and blankets for a week each and it was tough. I remember reading about a blood-brain barrier that can be penetrated and cause severe brain problems, so it really is nothing to mess with. The lights work wonders even though they aren't fun. Some of the kids had more blood draws than others, but it is important to keep those biliruben levels in control. I'll be praying for you, I know how exhausting this can be. I'm glad :D :D Great news!! :grouphug: When my son was in the hospital at 4 his blood sugar was elevated. They thought it was a stress response but had to prick his finger 3 times a day to be sure. After the first day or so when a nurse walked in he would say "please don't poke me, pleeeeeease." It was so sad. I know those nurses felt horrible.
