Amy in NH
We have a kit for making papyrus paper. We followed the directions, but the strips didn't stick together, so now we have a bunch of flattened, dried papyrus strips. If you've done this before, did you have trouble? Did yours stick? Any idea what we did wrong? TIA!
Kate in Arabia
Hi Amy, we've done the "regular" papermaking, but not tried papyrus. From the little I know about it, the Egyptians pounded the papyrus together until the resin inside was released and bonded the strips together. Not having seen the kit you're using, does it talk about how the strips are supposed to stick together? If you want to use what you already have and try to salvage it, how about using glue-and-water to simulate the resin (will come out more like paper mache)? Here's a website on doing that: http://www.crayola.com/crafts/detail/egyptian-papyrus-paper-craft/ Hth, I know how frustrating it is when these things don't work the way they're supposed to... Fourmother
Amy, we tried to make papyrus this year using a kit and had nearly the same results as you. A few of the strips stayed together, but most of them separated. We followed the directions closely - soaking the materials, flattening with a rolling pin, reserving all the liquid - all to no avail.
Alphabetika
We were so excited, and we did everything the kit said to do (which, as I recall, took a mighty long time!) and we got the same - little dried out strips. We were disappointed, but at least we had a good discussion about it!
Amy in NH
Thanks, guys! Only 2-3 strips actually stuck together. My ds13 wants to resoak them and experiment a little. Maybe if we overlap them more (or weave them together) and pound instead of roll?
