X-post: NY Times math column (now turning to algebra)

Recommended Posts

The New York Times now has a Monday math column which I mentioned on the general board. Given that the author, Steven Strogatz, has moved to algebra and will be discussing high school math in the weeks ahead, I thought it might be a good idea to mention the column over here as well.

You and your students might enjoy reading this.

Love these! Thanks for posting...I shared with my coworkers. And I think I added about six new books to my wish list. GRIN.

Thanks Jane. Will stay tuned.

BTW, I want to thank both you and LoriM for mentioning the book "The Giant Golden Book of Mathematics" by Irving Adler is threads oh so long ago. I borrowed it through ILL and enjoyed it so much that I bought a used copy for ds.

Cool! I don't know how old your DS is but you might want to borrow The Number Devil if you have not already.

Funny you should mention it. I had a couple of chapters left but could not renew it at the library yesterday. I am hoping to get it again to finish it and then ds can read it too. We kept fighting over it :-) He is 12 yrs old.

Jane, I:001_wub: you and your math threads. I just wish I didn't find them on days that are booked solid with some of life's more tedious tasks. Then again, there was a time before homeschooling that I thought math was rather tedious. Do you suppose there is a lesson there?:D

I saw a very old thread that mentioned this book and went ahead and ordered it used from Amazon. It is a great book and we have learned so much already.
