langfam
How are your children's universities reacting? DD called this morning to say that the Nursing and Drama departments will be closed. Many of the other departments like Art, Music and Learning Support are facing severe cuts. DS just sent me this youtube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wttThUNntvE&feature=youtube_gdata http://jacksonville.com/news/georgia/2010-03-02/story/georgia_colleges_release_budget_cuts_list_coastal_georgia_faces_retren
Mary in GA
I am not aware of any closings or significant funding cuts for departments at ds's university. They are raising fees by something like $20 per student and cutting landscaping! Mary
langfam
Universities across GA are being asked to slash their budgets by 30%. On our local news last night there was a report of a possible 33% increase in tuition and raising fees to $1000. DD said at her political science class her professor talked to them about HOPE possibly raising the bar to GPA 3.6 because of tuition hikes. Please contact our state legislators and pass the word on to other GA families.

We've heard nothing similar from any source. There are stories in the rumor mill at ds's university that Hope scholarship will run out of funding within a year, however, I can find nothing to substantiate these rumors. 30% is extreme. We have been informed of fee hikes, but nothing like 30%. Mary

langfam
Most of this info I'm getting from dd when she comes back from school. Apparently the professors are passing on information. The news report about 30% tuition increase I heard myself on the local Augusta news. I know that HOPE is funded by the lottery, but the threat is that with increase tuition there will not be the money. At any rate, these cuts are only proposed, so please contact your legislators. http://www2.wjbf.com/jbf/news/state_regional/article/budget_cuts_at_the_medical_college/62328/ http://www2.wjbf.com/jbf/news/state_regional/georgia/article/university_system_of_georgia_chancellor_proposes_77_percent_increase_in_col/62218/ Edited March 9, 2010 by langfam
